2003 Oldsmobile Alero: Overview

Available XM satellite radio and deletion of standard antilock brakes on lower-line models mark the 2003 Alero. Oldsmobile's best-selling car shares its design and powertrains with the Pontiac Grand Am, but has different styling. Alero offers coupes and sedans in four trim levels. GX and GL1 models have a 4-cyl engine. GL2 and GLS models come with a V6 that's optional on GL1. Automatic transmission is standard. Manual is available with the 4 cyl. ABS is now optional on GX and GL1. It remains standard on GL2 and GLS, and includes 4-wheel disc brakes. Traction control is standard on GL2 and GLS, and included with the ABS option. All Aleros come with air conditioning, power locks, CD player, and cruise control. Alero is slated to go out of production after the 2004 model year as the Olds brand is phased out.

COMPETITION

Playing the roll of crossover utility vehicle in a segment of sedans and wagons gives Chrysler PT Cruiser a leg up on the competition. It offers versatility and eye-catching styling not found among compact cars and this year adds more power with the Turbo model.

Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix are new this year and are worth considering as Recommended SUV-like alternatives. Hyundai's Sonata earns recognition for offering impressive comfort, equipment, and warranty coverage at a reasonable price. The all-wheel drive Subaru Outback/Legacy is another Recommended selection, thanks to a superb AWD system and roomy cargo holds.
