Vehicle Highlights

Front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags are newly available for 2003 in Nissan's oldest SUV. Pathfinder shares its design with the QX4 from Nissan's upscale Infiniti division. It comes in SE and uplevel LE trim, both with a 3.5-liter V6, mandatory automatic transmission, and a choice of rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive. The SE's 4WD must be disengaged on dry pavement. The LE uses QX4's All-Mode 4WD, which can be left engaged on dry pavement. Both systems include low-range gearing. ABS is standard. Pathfinder seats five and does not offer 3rd-row seating. Newly standard on the LE and optional on SE are front side airbags and curtain side airbags; the curtain bags cover both seating rows. The LE comes with leather upholstery, while the side and curtain airbags are part of SE's optional Leather Package. An antiskid/traction-control system is also newly available for both models as part of a package that also includes a tire-pressure monitor. Rear-seat video and DVD entertainment are available, though a navigation system is no longer offered. Rounding out the changes, 4WD LEs gain standard heated front seats, and all versions get LATCH-system child-seat anchors, a redesigned steering wheel and center dashboard, and an electronic tailgate release.

COMPETITION

New to the class this year, Honda Pilot has taken the lead as a Best Buy. It offers ample cargo space, seating for eight passengers, all-wheel drive with a locking rear differential for added traction, and above-average refinement. Toyota Highlander is our other Best Buy, chosen for its on-road competence, convenience, and attractive pricing and design.

Our Recommended choices feature more-traditional SUVs: Ford Explorer, GMC Envoy, and Toyota 4Runner. For 2003, all now offer optional V8 engines and--with the exception of 4Runner--three rows of seats.
