Vehicle Highlights
Signaling a redesigned replacement due for 2004, Nissan's flagship sedans make few changes for model-year '03. Maxima continues in GXE, sporty SE, and luxury GLE trim. All have a 3.5-liter V6 and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes with full-power brake assist. A 4-speed automatic transmission is mandatory on GXE and GLE and optional for SE in lieu of a 6-speed manual. GXE comes with 16-inch wheels vs. other models' 17s. All include xenon headlamps, power driver seat, and trip computer with steering-wheel controls. A navigation system with dashboard screen is optional linewide. For 2003, front side airbags become standard for the GLE; they remain optional for SE and unavailable on GXE. A new Titanium Edition Package for SEs includes the front side airbags, plus premium Bose audio with in-dash CD changer, compass, special wheels, titanium-colored interior trim, and available polished Titanium paint. Nissan's Infiniti Division sells an upscale Maxima with different styling as the I35.
COMPETITION
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced. Camry was new last year and Accord holds that honor this year.
Recommended models include the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, sporty Chrysler Sebring/Dodge Stratus twins, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. Despite relatively high prices, the refined Volkswagen Passat is also Recommended. Sedan and wagon models are offered with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and four-, six-, or class-exclusive eight-cylinder power. Budget-level interior materials and assembly disappointments aside, the Nissan Altima is Recommended for its impressive interior room, road manners, and reasonable price.
