Vehicle Highlights

Mitsubishi enters the compact-SUV fray with a new wagon based on its Lancer subcompact car. Outlander is slightly longer overall than most SUVs in the compact class, though no taller or wider. It seats five and its only powertrain is a 140-hp 4-cyl engine and 4-speed automatic transmission with a separate gate for manual shifting. Front- or all-wheel-drive versions are offered. Outlander is not intended for serious off-road use, and its AWD lacks low-range gearing. Base LS and uplevel XLS trim levels are offered. Optional features limited to the XLS include front side airbags, ABS, a sunroof, and leather upholstery. All Outlanders come with 16-inch wheels; 60/40 split folding rear seatbacks; air conditioning; CD audio; cruise control; and power windows, locks, and mirrors. The XLS adds alloy wheels, a roof rack, rear spoiler, fog lamps, and clear taillamp lenses. Inside, the XLS is distinguished by white-faced instrumentation, see-through headrests, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

COMPETITION

Though our Best Buys, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Mazda Tribute don't offer true off-road ability, they do mix ride comfort, cargo capacity, and versatility with all-weather traction. The V6 Tribute/Escape offers more power, comfort, and space than any in its class. CR-V has a bit more on-road refinement and cargo space.

Another car-based mini-SUV, Subaru Forester is a Recommended choice. Like the CR-V it doesn't have a low range for serious off-road use, but it blends excellent on-road manners with SUV styling. The Jeep Liberty may lack some of the advantages of more-carlike SUVs, but it leads the pack in off-road ability. It's Recommended as an affordable, capable competitor.
