2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Review
Midyear addition of a high-performance all-wheel-drive model highlights 2003 for this subcompact sedan. The AWD Evolution joins Lancer's front-wheel-drive ES, LS, and sporty O-Z Rally models. All have a 2.0-liter 4-cyl engine. Evolution's is turbocharged and has 271 hp. The others have 120 hp. A 5-speed manual transmission is mandatory on Evolution, standard on ES and O-Z. An automatic is standard on the LS and optional on ES and O-Z. ABS is standard on the Evolution, optional for the LS along with front side airbags; neither are available on other Lancers. The LS comes with 15-inch alloy wheels vs. the ES's steel 14s. The O-Z uses 15-inch O-Z-brand alloy wheels, aero body trim, white-face gauges, and metal-look interior trim. The Evolution has distinct front-end styling and additional features such as 17-inch Enkei-brand alloy wheels, a sport suspension, Brembo-brand 4-wheel disc brakes (other Lancers have rear drum brakes), and a choice of two rear spoilers. New for 2003 is an optional sunroof that's available on all but the ES model.
Competition
Honda Civic continues to be the car to beat with a wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. Also a Best Buy, Ford Focus doesn't offer the refinement of the Civic, but doesn't cost as much either.

Topping the crowded Recommended list are Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys. However, they are among the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the redesigned but still reliable Toyota Corolla, the sporty Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege. Each of these is a valid alternative to a Best Buy if price is your major concern.
News
Lancer greets 2004 with a fairly heavy facelift, new Sportback wagon models, and a sporty Ralliart sedan and wagon with a larger engine and more power. Mitsubishi revealed these and other changes at the 2003 New York Auto Show.

All '04s get a bolder nose aping that of the hotshot Evolution, plus revamped taillights and interior trim. The Sportback comes in LS and Ralliart versions with a 162-hp 2.4-liter 4-cyl engine, which is also standard for the Ralliart sedan. ES, LS, and O-Z Rally sedans continue with a 2.0-liter unit. Both wagons include 4-wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, keyless entry, and power windows/locks/mirrors. The Ralliart pair come with ABS, firmed-up sport suspension, 16-inch alloy wheels, lower-body skirts, plus front side airbags and racier cabin appointments including more heavily bolstered front bucket seats. The sedan wears a rear spoiler.

Prices haven't been announced, but Mitsubishi says the Ralliart sedan should start under $18,000, a mighty $12,000 below the fast-and-furious turbo 2.0-liter Evo. Both Ralliart models target Ford Focus SVT, Honda Civic Si, Nissan Sentra SE-R and other "pocket rockets". They're part of this year's U.S. rollout for Mitsubishi's performance brand, which also involves offering Ralliart speed and appearance accessories through dealers. All this is aimed at the Gen-Y crowd, as Mitsubishi seeks to improve on its overall 2002 sales gain of 7 percent vs. calendar '01. The Lancer itself is selling pretty well too, drawing over 94,000 orders from its late-2001 debut through the end of '02.

Despite all this activity, sources say a redesigned Lancer is already in the works for 2007. It's reportedly based on a Mitsubishi-engineered platform that's also destined for the next Dodge Neon and Chrysler PT Cruiser. This plan reflects continued cost-cutting efforts by DaimlerChrysler, which owns a controlling interest in Mitsubishi Motors of Japan and is looking to share more components and platforms among similar Mitsubishi and Chrysler Group models.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

ES, man. LS, auto. O-Z, man. Evolution Class Average
4 4 4 8 4

Regular Lancers are adequate performers with manual transmission. The automatic makes fairly prompt downshifts, but dulls acceleration at any speed. Evolutions suffer low-speed turbo lag, then suddenly rocket forward as turbo starts boosting.
Fuel Economy

ES, man. LS, auto. O-Z, man. Evolution Class Average
7 6 7 5 6.5

Test O-Z with manual transmission averaged 26.4 mpg on recommended regular fuel. Test Evolution averaged 22.8 in mostly highway driving on required premium.
Ride Quality

ES, man. LS, auto. O-Z, man. Evolution Class Average
6 6 6 2 4.4

Quite comfortable for a subcompact. Stable and composed, though dips at highway speeds can cause minor bounce. Though extremely firm, Evolutions ride without harshness.
Steering/Handling/Braking

ES, man. LS, auto. O-Z, man. Evolution Class Average
5 6 6 9 5.3

Mainstream models generally competent. Body lean noticeable, but not excessive; grip fairly good. Steering effort natural, though test O-Z had a nervous, unsettled feel at highway speeds. Stopping power adequate, but ABS should be offered on all models. Evolutions are race cars for the road, providing AWD grip and laser-sharp handling. Evos' brakes are reassuringly powerful and provide impressively short stops.
Quietness

ES, man. LS, auto. O-Z, man. Evolution Class Average
5 5 5 2 3.7

Wind noise and tire whine evident at highway speeds but not overwhelming. Engine smooth and fairly refined under acceleration. Evolution's engine and road noise are constant reminders of its racing intentions; even mild acceleration is accompanied by a roar.
Controls

ES, man. LS, auto. O-Z, man. Evolution Class Average
6 6 6 6 5.6

Slightly undersized audio buttons. Simple layout otherwise clear and handy. Evolution's gauges have black background, O-Z's have white background, other models' have gray background. Evo and O-Z interior trimmed for sportier look. Plastics not that classy regardless of model, but cabin materials otherwise durable, inoffensive. Doors, trunklid close with metallic resonance.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

ES, man. LS, auto. O-Z, man. Evolution Class Average
5 5 5 6 4.8

Good tall-adult room. Comfortable, supportive seats. Driver gets standard tilt steering wheel, height-adjustable seat (except Evolution), good outward visibility. Evolution's firm, supportive sport seats offer excellent comfort for longer drives. Evo also has a rear-window wiper.
Room/Comfort (rear)

ES, man. LS, auto. O-Z, man. Evolution Class Average
4 4 4 4 3.7

Average for class. Head and knee clearance snug for tall riders. Seat too firm and flat for best support, but not uncomfortable.
Cargo Room

ES, man. LS, auto. O-Z, man. Evolution Class Average
3 3 3 3 3.8

Fairly large trunk, but lid narrows at bottom and hinges intrude into cargo area. LS and O-Z have 70/30 split folding seatback, but pass-through to trunk is very small.
Value within Class

ES, man. LS, auto. O-Z, man. Evolution Class Average
6 7 6 3 5.4

Tepid acceleration is their only major fault, but mainstream Lancers offer little to lure buyers from such higher-profile rivals as Ford Focus and Honda Civic--except for bigger price discounts. The Evolution rivals Subaru's Impreza WRX as a performance model for the "fast and furious" crowd.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
