2003 Mitsubishi Galant Full Review
Date Published: 2/21/08
2003 Mitsubishi Galant Review
Mitsubishi's top-selling car closes 2003 as a compact sedan in preparation for a 2004 redesign as a midsize car. The '03 comes with a 4-cyl engine in DE, ES, and LS models. A V6 powers ES V6, LS V6, and sporty GTZ V6 versions. All use automatic transmission. V6 models include 4-wheel disc brakes. ABS is standard on LS and GTZ models and is optional on the ES models. Front side airbags are exclusive to LS models and the GTZ, where they're standard. Traction control is standard on the LS V6 and GTZ and is optional for the ES V6 in an All Weather Package that also includes ABS and heated mirrors. Leather upholstery is standard for the GTZ, optional for LS models. Available for ES Galants is a Sun and Sound Package that includes a sunroof, upgraded audio, and alloy wheels, all of which are standard on LS models and the GTZ.

Competition
Playing the roll of crossover utility vehicle in a segment of sedans and wagons gives Chrysler PT Cruiser a leg up on the competition. It offers versatility and eye-catching styling not found among compact cars and this year adds more power with the Turbo model.

Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix are new this year and are worth considering as Recommended SUV-like alternatives. Hyundai's Sonata earns recognition for offering impressive comfort, equipment, and warranty coverage at a reasonable price. The all-wheel drive Subaru Outback/Legacy is another Recommended selection, thanks to a superb AWD system and roomy cargo holds.
News
Mitsubishi unveiled a new-generation Galant at the recent New York Auto Show, a good two years earlier than pundits expected. The redesigned '04 sedan goes on sale this fall in four versions built on the "Project America" platform launched with the '04 Endeavor SUV. Fresh styling brings dimensional increases that move Galant firmly into the midsize class at last. Wheelbase, for example, expands by nearly 5 inches to 108.3, overall length by 2.2 inches to 190, and width by almost 4 inches to 72.4. Mitsubishi claims more passenger and cargo room as a result. Weight inevitably goes up too, but is at least partly offset by increased power.

The lineup again starts with a Galant DE carrying a 2.4-liter 4-cyl engine, newly buffed to 160 hp, a gain of 20. Expected to start below $19,000, the DE has standard automatic transmission--still a 4-speed--plus 4-wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, keyless entry, power windows and locks, and 16-inch wheels instead of 15s. The step-up ES, expected to start below $20K, adds cruise control and special trim. Next up, at around $22,000, is the Galant LS with a 230-horsepower version of the Endeavor's 3.8-liter V6. The LS also includes a manual shift gate for its automatic transmission, plus ABS and traction control. Finally, there's a sporty V6 line-topper now called GTS. It comes with side airbags, leather, premium audio, power driver's seat, automatic climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels and sport suspension, plus a choice of interior trims. We'll have more details soon, including "first drive" comments, so keep checking back with us.

Despite an aging design and a troubled economy, the current Galant posted a 3.7-percent year-to-year sales gain in calendar 2002, though numerous buy-now come-ons were a big help. Still, this line has been driving Mitsubishi's recent U.S. sales resurgence, so much is riding on the replacement '04s.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

ES, 4-cyl auto. GTZ Class Average
3 6 4

Both engines are smooth, as is the automatic transmission, but the V6 has far better midrange oomph than the 4 cyl. Four-cyl Galants have adequate go, clocking 10.3 sec in our 0-60-mph test. Test GTZ did 8.3 sec.
Fuel Economy

ES, 4-cyl auto. GTZ Class Average
6 5 6.5

Test V6 Galants averaged 21-22.2 mpg. Test 4-cyl ES averaged 24 mpg. Mitsubishi recommends premium fuel for V6.
Ride Quality

ES, 4-cyl auto. GTZ Class Average
6 5 4.4

Comfortably compliant and controlled, aside from minor tail hop over sharp ridges. Small bumps most noticed in GTZ because of its firmer sport suspension.
Steering/Handling/Braking

ES, 4-cyl auto. GTZ Class Average
5 7 5.3

All Galants have predictable yet sporty moves, abetted by accurate steering. Handling-oriented chassis gives GTZ slightly less body lean in tight corners.
Quietness

ES, 4-cyl auto. GTZ Class Average
4 4 3.7

Engine noise, wind rush well-muffled. Tire roar noticed mainly on coarse pavement.
Controls

ES, 4-cyl auto. GTZ Class Average
6 6 5.6

Well-placed, self-explanatory. Design and layout clean, simple, though uninspired. Cabin materials fall short of Honda/Toyota/Volkswagen standards. Doors and trunklid reverberate when slammed.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

ES, 4-cyl auto. GTZ Class Average
5 5 4.8

Comfortable seats, but tall occupants get no excess head or leg room. Visibility aft hindered by high-tail styling. Driver positioning in GTZ helped by standard power driver seat, which is available for LS models, but only in a pricey leather option package.
Room/Comfort (rear)

ES, 4-cyl auto. GTZ Class Average
4 4 3.7

Average room for two adults. Narrow floor passages impede entry/exit.
Cargo Room

ES, 4-cyl auto. GTZ Class Average
3 3 3.8

Flat-floor low-liftover trunk is spacious enough, and all models except base DE have a trunk pass-through.
Value within Class

ES, 4-cyl auto. GTZ Class Average
6 6 5.4

Galant matches most class rivals for driving pleasure, but needs better workmanship and higher resale value to merit our recommendation. Discounts should be readily available on the outgoing '03 generation, though.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
