Vehicle Highlights
Redesigned for 2003, this 2-seat convertible has new styling, more high-tech features, and a retractable metal hardtop instead of a cloth folding top. It's slightly larger than the 1990-2002 model, yet some 125 lb lighter. The SL500 retains a 302-hp 5.0-liter V8. The new high-performance SL55 AMG has a 493-hp supercharged 5.4 V8. A 5-speed automatic with a manual-shift gate is the only transmission, though the SL55's "SpeedShift" unit gets performance programming and steering-wheel shift buttons. Both models have Mercedes' ABC active suspension designed to reduce cornering lean, plus an antiskid/traction-control system. The antilock 4-wheel disc brakes' "brake-by-wire" technology modulates pressure to each wheel. Head/torso side airbags, driver knee airbag, and a rollover bar that pops up if sensors detect an impending tip are standard. So are navigation and assistance systems, and a second battery, mounted in the trunk, to run power accessories. The SL500 comes with 17-inch wheels. Standard on the SL55 and optional on the SL500 are 18s with higher-speed low-profile tires. Options include bi-xenon headlamps and ventilated and massaging seats. Also available is Mercedes' Distronic cruise control designed to maintain a set following distance and its Keyless Go credit-card-sized transmitter for unlocking and starting the car simply by touch. Voice control for audio, phone, and other functions is a dealer option.
COMPETITION
With wide price ranges and numerous body configurations, this diverse segment has two clear Best Buy choices--the refined Lexus LS 430 and the unique Audi A6. The LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at around $55,000, while the A6 earns Best Buy status for its blend of space, performance, design sophistication, powertrain choices, and workmanship at prices below those of most rivals.
We Recommend the Acura RL--a steal at around $45,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille.
