2003 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Review
Redesigned sedans and midyear addition of a high-performance model mark 2003 for Mercedes-Benz' best-selling line. Continuing in V6 and V8 form, '03 E-Class sedans are slightly larger but no heavier than their 1996-02 predecessors. Redesigned E-Class wagons are due for 2004; some carryover wagons were offered as 2003 models. Among sedans, the E320 retains a 221-hp V6. The E500 has a 302-hp 5.0-liter V8; it replaces the 275-hp E430. Added midyear, the E55 has a supercharged 469-hp 5.4 V8. All use a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift gate (the E55 adds manual-shift steering-wheel buttons). Antiskid/traction control is standard. So is ABS, now activated "by wire" to electronically modulate each wheel's brake pressure. Standard on V8s and available on the E320 is air suspension with three driver-selectable firmness levels. The E320 comes with 16-inch wheels, the E500 with 17s, the E55 18s. Front and rear side airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, and Mercedes' TeleAid assistance system are standard. Among options: rear-obstacle warning; voice-activated cell phone and navigation; Mercedes' Distronic cruise control designed to maintain a set following distance; and bi-xenon headlamps. Also available are heated/ventilated front seats and Dynamic Drive massaging front seats with bladders that inflate to counter cornering forces. A twin-sunroof option consists of a conventional sunroof over the front seats and a glass panel over the rears; a solar-cell version runs an interior cooling fan. Mercedes' optional Keyless Go credit-card-sized transmitter unlocks and starts the car. Developed by Mercedes' AMG racing arm, the E55 has exclusive trim and sport suspension, exhaust, and seats.
Competition
With wide price ranges and numerous body configurations, this diverse segment has two clear Best Buy choices--the refined Lexus LS 430 and the unique Audi A6. The LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at around $55,000, while the A6 earns Best Buy status for its blend of space, performance, design sophistication, powertrain choices, and workmanship at prices below those of most rivals.

We Recommend the Acura RL--a steal at around $45,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille.
News
As noted, redesigned E-Class wagons are due for 2004. Ditto the return of Mercedes' 4-Matic AWD option for both body styles. Also likely at about the same time, perhaps a bit later, is a new hot-rod E55 AMG sedan and, possibly, a first-ever wagon version. By 2005 or '06, all E-Class models should get the 6-speed automatic transmission now in development to replace the current 5-speed.

Expected in early 2004 is a "sport wagon" E-Class spinoff, previewed by the recent GST concept ("Grand Sport Tourer"). The production version will be built at Mercedes' Alabama plant in 5- and 7-passenger models said to measure a respective 190 and 200 inches long overall. Engines, which might include a tuned AMG V8, are borrowed from other current Mercedes, but 4-Matic AWD should be standard. The GSTs, which might be called "GS-Class," are designed for car-like handling and refinement, with tall-body styling but a lower profile than rival sport wagons like Audi's A6 allroad. Look for the full E-Class complement of airbags and other safety features, luxury interior, and high-end options like navigation and rear DVD entertainment.

The C-Class is now Mercedes' most popular U.S. model line. The E-Class used to be, but slipped by 10.3 percent in calendar 2001 and a more worrisome 24.3 percent in the first nine months of 2002. An ailing economy and an old basic design were the likely factors. Now that the design issue is moot, it'll be interesting to see how E-Class fares in coming months.
