Vehicle Highlights

A limited-edition, high-performance model joins Mazda's subcompact line for 2003. The mainstream Protege roster offers sedans in DX, LX, and ES trim, and a wagon called the Protege5. The MP3 version is dropped, but added is the MazdaSpeed Protege sedan with a 170-hp turbocharged version of Protege's standard 130-hp 4-cyl engine. Mazda plans to build just 2000 MazdaSpeed sedans, which have a special sport suspension with 17-inch wheels, standard ABS, and unique exterior and interior trim. A "2003.5" version of the MazdaSpeed sedan appeared midyear with slightly altered exterior appearance, including dark silver wheels. A 5-speed manual transmission is mandatory on the MazdaSpeed and standard on other Proteges. The optional automatic now comes with a manual shift gate in the ES and Protege5. Front side airbags and ABS are grouped in option packages for LX, ES, and Protege5. Like MazdaSpeed, the Protege5 has specific cosmetic touches inside and out. ES and Protege5 get new alloy wheels and silver gauge faces for '03.

COMPETITION

Honda Civic continues to be the car to beat with a wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. Also a Best Buy, Ford Focus doesn't offer the refinement of the Civic, but doesn't cost as much either.

Topping the crowded Recommended list are Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys. However, they are among the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the redesigned but still reliable Toyota Corolla, the sporty Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege. Each of these is a valid alternative to a Best Buy if price is your major concern.
