Vehicle Highlights

Base versions of Mazda's 2-seat sports car exchange standard 15-inch wheels for 16s for 2003, and midyear brings three new models. Introduced in late spring were the Club Sport, which deletes air conditioning and power steering and is aimed at racing enthusiasts; the Shinsen Version that slots between the base and LS; and the new top-line SE with unique trim. All models have a manual-folding soft top with heated glass rear window. A removable hardtop is optional. The sole engine is a 142-hp 4 cyl teamed with standard 5-speed manual transmission or optional 4-speed automatic. A 6-speed manual is standard on the SE, optional on LS. ABS is optional on LS and SE, unavailable on the others. Optional on all but the Club Sport are appearance packages with rear mud guards and more-pronounced bodyside sills.

COMPETITION

These days, sports cars include hard-core performance models as well as luxurious touring convertibles. Our two Best Buys give you a little of both worlds. Chevrolet Corvette is fast, comfortable, and reasonably affordable. It doesn't beat you up with a hard ride, and it will cruise quietly at highway speeds. The Mazda Miata, is a bare-bones roadster with few frills at a great price. For weekend fun on a twisty back road, it's your best bet.

A Recommended selection, Honda S2000 offers up all the performance and thrills of a traditional sports car without the intimidating price tag. Audi's TT is solid, stylish, and loaded with features making it fit for the Recommended list as well. Like no other in its class, TT offers the all-weather advantage of available quattro AWD at a great price. The Nissan 350Z is Recommended for combining heart-stopping performance with civility at such a reasonable price.
