Vehicle Highlights
Lincoln adds a second SUV for 2003 with a gilded version of the Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer. Aviator's styling mimics Lincoln's bigger Navigator, and it differs from Explorer and Mountaineer in engine power, suspension tuning, and cabin decor. Aviator uses a 302-hp version of the 240-hp V8 that's optional in the Ford and Mercury. It has a 5-speed automatic transmission and offers rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. Added midyear for AWD models was an optional traction-control/antiskid system, and for Premium models, a Kitty Hawk Edition with special trim. Aviator's standard 17-inch wheels, wood interior trim, and Navigator-style 2nd-row bucket seats with center console are unavailable on its Ford and Mercury cousins. A folding 3rd-row bench seat is standard, and a 3-passenger 2nd-row bench seat is available, for up to 7-passenger capacity. Standard head-protecting curtain side airbags serve the 1st and 2nd seating rows and are designed to deploy in a side collision or rollover. Power-adjustable pedals, rear-obstacle detection, and dual-zone climate system with rear controls are also standard. Luxury and uplevel Premium models are offered. The Premium includes xenon headlamps, heated/cooled power front seats, in-dash CD changer, and special machine-finish wheels. Options include a sunroof, navigation system, and rear DVD entertainment.
COMPETITION
Luxury SUVs vary in size and type, including former members of both the Full-size and Midsize SUV classes, along with a few all-new models. All offer higher standards of workmanship, comfort, refinement, and pricing than other SUVs.
Our Best Buys are Acura MDX and Toyota Land Cruiser. Both are extremely capable on-road and offer roomy interiors that feature quality workmanship and materials. MDX gets slightly better fuel economy and is more reasonably priced. Land Cruiser offers a V8 engine, rugged body-on-frame chassis, and true off-road ability.
Though rugged and trucky, the Recommended Mercedes-Benz M-Class is spacious, offers a variety of model and engine choices, and numerous safety features. If you don't venture too far off-road, take a look at the car-based Lexus RX 300. Recommended based on price, refinement, and luxury appointments.
