2003 Land Rover Discovery Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2003 Land Rover Discovery Review
More power and revised front styling are among 2003 alterations to Land Rover's oldest SUV. In price and dimensions, Discovery falls between Land Rover's Freelander and Range Rover. It comes in S, SE, and top-line HSE models. An available 3rd-row seat increases passenger capacity from five to seven, adding a "7" suffix to the badge. SE and HSE have wood and leather interior trim and dual sunroofs. All use a 217-hp 4.6-liter V8, which replaces a 188-hp 4.0 V8 and adds 50 lb-ft of torque. Carried over as standard are a 4-speed automatic transmission, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and all-wheel drive with low-range gearing and traction control. Included in the optional Suspension Package is Land Rover's Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE), which uses hydraulic suspension levers to reduce body lean in turns. It also includes rear self-leveling suspension. The S model has 16 inch alloy wheels, the others have 18s. The grille, headlamps, and front bumper are restyled for '03, and instrument graphics are revised. A rear-obstacle-detection system is new and exclusive to the HSE. A navigation system is standard on the HSE and optional on the SE. Rear DVD entertainment also is available. Land Rover is owned by Ford.
Competition
Luxury SUVs vary in size and type, including former members of both the Full-size and Midsize SUV classes, along with a few all-new models. All offer higher standards of workmanship, comfort, refinement, and pricing than other SUVs.

Our Best Buys are Acura MDX and Toyota Land Cruiser. Both are extremely capable on-road and offer roomy interiors that feature quality workmanship and materials. MDX gets slightly better fuel economy and is more reasonably priced. Land Cruiser offers a V8 engine, rugged body-on-frame chassis, and true off-road ability.

Though rugged and trucky, the Recommended Mercedes-Benz M-Class is spacious, offers a variety of model and engine choices, and numerous safety features. If you don't venture too far off-road, take a look at the car-based Lexus RX 300. Recommended based on price, refinement, and luxury appointments.
News
Discovery is being redesigned for a U.S. launch in 2004, likely for the '05 campaign. British sources say it's related to a new version of the Defender, the Jeep Wrangler-style Land Rover last sold here in 1997. The new Defender may come to the U.S., but it's not yet locked-in.

The next Discovery retains body-on-frame construction, but solid axles give way to all-independent suspension for a smoother on-road ride; air springs are a likely option for top-trim models. The standard dual-range 4WD reportedly adds a locking center differential. Powertrains are unknown, but we'd expect a 4.2-liter V8, from sister division Jaguar, pulling a 5- or 6-speed automatic transmission.

Size and styling change dramatically. A bi-level roofline and other Discovery cues continue, but a crisper, cleaner look is achieved with a lower waistline, much larger windows, and a spare tire carried beneath the cargo floor instead of outside. The swing-out rear door is replaced by a tall lift-up window above a separate tailgate that drops down or swings open. Seating for five or seven continues, but with more room for all thanks to larger dimensions. Wheelbase, for example, is said to stretch a whopping 13 inches to about 113.4, overall length nearly 5 inches to near 190. Overall height falls some 1.6 inches, which should combine with wider axles for improved cornering stability.

Further details aren't available, but the '05 should retain existing Discovery features like the anti-lean ACE suspension and off-road Hill Descent Control. The redesign was begun under BMW, Land Rover's former owner, so torso and head-protecting side airbags will likely be standard.

Discovery sales eased fractionally in 2001, but slipped 13.4 percent in 2002.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

SE HSE w/Suspension Pkg. Class Average
4 4 5.8

Test SE did 0-60 mph in 9.1 sec, a useful improvement over the 4.0-liter version's 10.2. The added torque provides a needed boost in midrange passing response, too. On-road towing capacity is 5500 lb.
Fuel Economy

SE HSE w/Suspension Pkg. Class Average
2 2 3.1

Not good. Test SEs averaged 11.5-13.3 mpg, depending on driving conditions. Premium fuel required.
Ride Quality

SE HSE w/Suspension Pkg. Class Average
3 4 4.6

Regular suspension takes most bumps in stride, but with more unwanted body motion than in most SUVs. Suspension Package's ACE feature quells body motions, but not inherent choppiness on rough roads.
Steering/Handling/Braking

SE HSE w/Suspension Pkg. Class Average
2 4 5.1

Feels tippy in quick maneuvers with standard suspension. ACE improves stability and agility, but Discovery still feels top-heavy in most corners. Braking performance no more than adequate, pedal effort high. Just one simulated panic stop in test SE illuminated dashboard warning lights signaling a problem with the ABS, traction-control, and hill-descent-control systems.
Quietness

SE HSE w/Suspension Pkg. Class Average
3 3 5.4

Despite efforts to reduce intrusion of wind, engine, and axle noise with revisions to body mounts and exhaust system for '03, Discovery still suffers a prominent exhaust note and too much wind rush. Test SE exhibited intrusive gear whine, too.
Controls

SE HSE w/Suspension Pkg. Class Average
2 2 5.7

Dated and messy. Some controls mysteriously marked and/or haphazardly placed, like power-seat switches on the side of the center console. Steering-wheel rim blocks other buttons. No opportunity to test with navigation system. Too many plastic panels detract from cabin decor, though available leather and wood dresses it up. Test SE suffered interior trim rattles.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

SE HSE w/Suspension Pkg. Class Average
5 5 7.3

Ample head room, but narrow footwells feel confining and interior step-in is lofty. Tall drivers can't get very far back from the wheel, and long-legged front passengers ride with knees near dashboard. Aft visibility not great, so HSE's rear-obstacle-detection system to warn of close-by objects is a fine idea.
Room/Comfort (rear)

SE HSE w/Suspension Pkg. Class Average
6 6 5.9

Sky-high head room and good leg space even behind tall front seaters, but getting in or out demands steep steps and much body English even for an SUV. Optional forward-facing 3rd-row seats are useful for kids but not adults.
Cargo Room

SE HSE w/Suspension Pkg. Class Average
7 7 7.5

High load deck. Cargo door opens to the right, blocking curbside loading. Meager space without 3rd-row seats removed; they also fold neatly against side walls to open up generous luggage room.
Value within Class

SE HSE w/Suspension Pkg. Class Average
2 2 5.2

Discovery is distinguished by a measure of British character, but a cold assessment reveals an old soldier trading on the Land Rover name. It is capable off-road, but most every similarly priced rival offers superior on-road manners, refinement, and materials quality.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
