2003 Jaguar XK Series Review
Larger V8s, a new automatic transmission, and available "smart" cruise control highlight Jaguar's sportiest cars for 2003. The XK Series offers coupes and convertibles in XK8 and XKR models. They replace last year's 4.0-liter V8 with a 4.2-liter V8 with slightly more power: 294 hp for the XK8, 390 for the supercharged XKR. Both engines are used in Jaguar's S-Type sedan, as is a new 6-speed automatic transmission, which replaces a 5 speed. XKs include front side airbags, rear-obstacle warning, antiskid and traction-control systems, and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, now with full-power emergency assist. XKRs gain Brembo-brand brakes for '03. All models come with 18-inch wheels (vs. 17s on previous XK8s). XK8s offer optional 19s; 20s are available for XKRs. XKRs have a mesh grille, louvered hood, rear spoiler, and computer-controlled shock absorbers. Standard on XKR and optional on XK8 is a navigation system and, new for '03, self-leveling xenon headlamps. In a midyear change, Jaguar's Adaptive Cruise Control, designed to maintain a set distance from traffic ahead, is optional on XK8s as well as XKRs.
Competition
With wide price ranges and numerous body configurations, this diverse segment has two clear Best Buy choices--the refined Lexus LS 430 and the unique Audi A6. The LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at around $55,000, while the A6 earns Best Buy status for its blend of space, performance, design sophistication, powertrain choices, and workmanship at prices below those of most rivals.
We Recommend the Acura RL--a steal at around $45,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille.
News
Jaguar's sporty 2-drs have been XJ sedan spinoffs since the mid-1970s, so the clean-sheet 2004 XJ should be the logical starting point for a next-generation XK. The only question involves timing. Some sources still say model-year 2005, but the replacement could be delayed to '06 or even '07 depending on the succcess of cost-cutting efforts now underway at parent Ford Motor Company and Jaguar itself.
Whenever it debuts, Project X150 will deliver a much lighter XK coupe and convertible on a cut-down version of the new XJ's aluminum body/chassis structure. Suspension hardware and electronic systems will also be borrowed. Styling should become somewhat sleeker, but not radically different in theme or proportions. Dimensions reportedly expand, but perhaps only enough to make the back seat something more than a token gesture. Look for the convertible's fabric top to power beneath a metal cover instead of riding on the body.
As with other Jags, XK sales have been sliding: down 23.7 percent year-to-year in calendar 2001 and another 24.4 percent in 2002. Of course, the XK isn't a high-volume item, so the numerical losses aren't huge, but they did contribute to Jaguar's worldwide loss of nearly $500 million in '02.
The next XK was slated to spawn a new Jaguar sports car, a uniquely styled 2-seater that had been shelved after Ford's own big loss of 2001. However, some insiders are saying the so-called F-Type has only been put on indefinite hold, implying it may still have a chance if and when Jaguar's financial outlook improves.

Test XKR coupe did 5.5 sec 0-60 mph. No opportunity to time 2003 XK8, but it feels strong from all speeds; based on tests of last year's 4.0-liter models, expect about 6.5 sec 0-60. All XKs work well with the new 6-speed automatic to deliver a smooth rush of power from virtually any speed, though manual shifting requires negotiating Jaguar's unusual J-shaped shift gate.

Calibrated for comfort. XKRs have tauter suspension settings, but all models are comfortable on most surfaces--at least with standard tires; larger, lower-profile optional tires increase thump and jiggle.

XKRs are more agile and controlled than XK8s, but all these 2-ton cats are luxury tourers, not feline sports cars. Newly standard antiskid system a praiseworthy plus in wet weather. Despite the heft, brakes make short, undramatic simulated panic stops.

Nearly silent at idle. XKRs add slight supercharger whine to the muted full-throttle growl, but never annoy. Road noise unobtrusive with standard tires. Convertibles suffer top-up wind rush.

Generally hassle-free, reflecting the influence of Jaguar parent Ford Motor Co., though some control markings take learning, and shift knob obscures J-gate shift pattern in manual mode. Cabin ambience is "olde English" leather and wood, assembled with appropriate care. Convertibles' power tops are beautifully finished, operate precisely.

Comfortable seats sit high enough to provide a good view of the road, but cockpit is cramped--especially knee room under steering column. Low build, wide door sills hamper entry/exit. Shallow side and rear glass impede driver visibility.

Without a retractable hardtop, XK loses out to its newer Lexus SC 430 and Mercedes-Benz SL rivals. And interior room is tight and prices are steep. Still, XKs shine for silky performance in an elegant package with Jaguar's unique charm.

Price note: XKR base price includes $1000 Gas-Guzzler tax.
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's
manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker.
Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are
what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options.
The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price
and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently
throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's
window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
| Test |
Jaguar XK Series 2-door coupe |
Jaguar XK Series 2-door convertible |
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's
worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to
rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury:
5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact
crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%;
1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover
when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%;
2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

Manufacturers may periodically offer additional coverage as a purchase incentive.
There offers are not reflected on this chart. The federal government requires two
other warranties. The Exhaust Emission Warranty covers corrosion-related parts for
2 years/24,000 miles, plus 8 years/80,000 miles on the catalytic converter and any
on-board diagnostic device. The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts
and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.
