2003 Jaguar X-Type Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2003 Jaguar X-Type Review
Jaguar's least-expensive car is virtually unchanged for 2003. The X-Type is based on the European Mondeo sedan from Jaguar-parent Ford, though it has its own styling, dimensions, and comes standard with all-wheel drive vs. Mondeo's front-wheel drive. Rival Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz models offer AWD at extra cost. The base 2.5 X-Type uses a 2.5-liter V6 with manual transmission or optional 5-speed automatic. The uplevel 3.0 model has a 3.0 V6 and automatic transmission; it offers the manual at no extra charge. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, leather-and-wood interior trim, front side airbags, and head-protecting curtain side airbags are standard. The Sport Package option adds unique trim, sport suspension, and 17-inch wheels, which for 2003 replace 16s as standard on 3.0 models. An antiskid system is part of the Sport Package and is a stand-alone option. Available for all X-Types are xenon headlamps, navigation and rear-obstacle-warning systems, and heated front seats. A sunroof option is packaged with a split fold rear seat. Dealer-installed voice activation for audio, climate, and navigation is available.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has its benchmark in the Lexus ES 300. It blends comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. ES 300 manages to offer a little more luxury than others in the class.

We Recommend the Acura TL, Audi A4, and new Infiniti G35. All offer comfort, speed, and nimble handling at attractive prices. The sporty and Euro-flavored BMW 3-Series is Recommended as a rear-drive alternative. The "3" has enough bodystyles and engine choices to suit anyone. At the other end of the near-luxury spectrum is the posh and comfortable Buick Park Avenue--an old-school luxo-cruiser from Detroit.
News
X-Type sales were fairly strong until quality glitches cropped up to turn off buyers, prompting parent Ford to offer cut-rate lease deals. But even that couldn't restore the initial momentum, forcing Jaguar to trim production for a time. U.S. X-Type sales totaled some 33,000 units in 2002, the model's first full calendar year--creditable, all things considered--yet Jaguar still lost some $500 million on worldwide operations for the 12 months. Just as bad, say some observers, the X-Type has cheapened Jaguar's blue-blood image while reviving memories of the bad old days when "Jaguar" and "reliability" were mutally exclusive terms.

Despite this wobbly start and stern cost-cutting pressures from Ford, Jaguar is plowing ahead with an X-Type wagon and hot R-models. The wagon reportedly bows overseas in spring 2004. U.S. sales should begin very soon afterwards, probably with the same V6 powerteams offered in sedans. Like the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class wagons, the X-Type emphasizes luxury and sporty handling over outright space and utility. Structure is reportedly the same as the sedan's from the rear doors forward, but the roofline tapers down to a trim liftgate with separate opening window.

The X-Type R should be here by early 2005, assuming it's not delayed for some reason. A sedan is assured, a wagon version possible. Chief attractions are a supercharged V6 with upwards of 330 hp, plus firmed-up suspension, less exterior chrome, a mesh grille, and standard 19-inch wheels and tires, but no garish rear spoiler or "aero" body skirts. British guesstimates have the R-model sedan doing 0-60 in just 5 sec and 160 mph all-out, though Jaguar isn't out to top the BMW M3 and Mercedes C32 AMG.

A final X-Type rumor concerns the current 3.0-liter V6, which reportedly gives way to a more potent 3.2 sometime soon, perhaps as early as model-year '04. We'll keep you posted.

Acceleration

2.5 w/Sport Pkg., man. 3.0 w/nav. sys., auto. Class Average
5 6 6.1

About 60 percent of sales are the 2.5 version. They're slow for near-luxury cars, but the 3.0s are class competitive. Test manual-transmission 2.5 did 0-60 mph in 8.5 sec vs. Jaguar's claim of 7.9 sec. Jaguar claims 8.5 sec 0-60 for the 2.5 with automatic. Test automatic-transmission 3.0 did 0-60 in 7.6 sec. Jaguar pegs the manual 3.0 at 6.6 sec. In most circumstances, neither engine feels satisfyingly strong below 4000 rpm. And left in Drive, the automatic transmission's tardy downshifts frustrate response in the 40-55-mph range. Test manual-transmission 2.5s tended to bog moving from a stop. Only 5 percent of U.S. X-Types get manual transmission.
Fuel Economy

2.5 w/Sport Pkg., man. 3.0 w/nav. sys., auto. Class Average
5 5 5.1

Test manual-transmission 2.5 averaged 19.5 mpg in mixed city/highway driving, 24.6 in mostly highway travel. Test automatic-transmission 3.0 averaged 21.4 mpg in primarily highway driving; expect slightly less overall. Both V6s require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

2.5 w/Sport Pkg., man. 3.0 w/nav. sys., auto. Class Average
5 7 6.4

Takes bumps as a solid unit, stable at speed, befitting sports/luxury positioning. Base suspension comfortably absorbs bad pavement. Tauter Sport Package suspension suffers wheel patter and some impact harshness.
Steering/Handling/Braking

2.5 w/Sport Pkg., man. 3.0 w/nav. sys., auto. Class Average
8 7 7

Secure, agile for the most part. Fast turns induce some body lean, but AWD maintains outstanding grip, even when powering out of wet corners. Sport-package steering quicker than base system's, but both are communicative, accurate, nicely weighted.
Quietness

2.5 w/Sport Pkg., man. 3.0 w/nav. sys., auto. Class Average
5 7 6.1

Wind rush impressively low. Sport Package tire roar intrudes on coarse pavement. Under full throttle, the 2.5 engine sounds ragged, the 3.0 growls nicely.
Controls

2.5 w/Sport Pkg., man. 3.0 w/nav. sys., auto. Class Average
6 6 6.4

Unobstructed instrumentation. Low-mounted audio controls require some testers to remove eyes from road. Navigation system no picnic to program, and incorporating some climate and audio functions monopolizes driver attention. Automatic transmission has Jaguar's J-shaped gate selector, which some testers fault for imprecise action and unorthodox shift pattern. Standard leather and wood strive for an upscale cabin ambience, but plastics don't match most rivals' for looks or feel.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

2.5 w/Sport Pkg., man. 3.0 w/nav. sys., auto. Class Average
6 6 6.1

Adequate 6-footer head room. Standard tilt/telescope steering wheel helps set comfortable driving position. Front seats narrower and softer than the European norm but have good support. Smartly sized mirrors contribute to fine outward visibility, despite tallish cowl.
Room/Comfort (rear)

2.5 w/Sport Pkg., man. 3.0 w/nav. sys., auto. Class Average
5 5 3.8

As much usable space as any direct rival. Seat cushion too soft for best support, and narrow doorways compromise entry/exit.
Cargo Room

2.5 w/Sport Pkg., man. 3.0 w/nav. sys., auto. Class Average
5 5 4.1

At 16 cu ft, trunk is among largest in class. Low liftover and nonintrusive strut hinges enhance versatility, but Jaguar charges extra for a folding rear seatback.
Value within Class

2.5 w/Sport Pkg., man. 3.0 w/nav. sys., auto. Class Average
3 3 4.8

It's not a purebred sports sedan, but X-Type is an acceptable blend of performance and Jaguar emotion, and makes this famous brand accessible to a new audience. Still, equipped with desirable options, 2.5 models are in the mid-$30,000 range, 3.0s in the $40,000s. There are any number of better all-around cars at those price points.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
