Vehicle Highlights

Isuzu juggles equipment to reduce 2003 base prices on its slow-selling crossover SUV. Axiom is basically a midsize Rodeo SUV with a sleeker body and larger V6. It comes in S and uplevel XS models, both with a 3.5-liter V6 and 4-speed automatic transmission from Isuzu's recently retired Trooper SUV. Axioms are available with rear-wheel drive or with Isuzu's Torque On Demand 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement and has low-range gearing. Axiom shares Rodeo's wheelbase but is 6 inches longer overall. ABS is standard. Side airbags are unavailable. Both models have 17-inch alloy wheels, and 4WD versions have rear disc brakes instead of drums. Base price of the entry-level Axiom drops $2190 partly by grouping such previously standard items as in-dash CD changer, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated power mirrors in a new Upgrade option package. Isuzu's Intelligent Suspension Control, which automatically varies shock-absorber firmness, is also dropped from the base model. It's now exclusive to the XS, which also comes with a sunroof, heated front seats, and leather upholstery. Other base-price reductions range from $860 to $2020, depending on model.

COMPETITION

New to the class this year, Honda Pilot has taken the lead as a Best Buy. It offers ample cargo space, seating for eight passengers, all-wheel drive with a locking rear differential for added traction, and above-average refinement. Toyota Highlander is our other Best Buy, chosen for its on-road competence, convenience, and attractive pricing and design.

Our Recommended choices feature more-traditional SUVs: Ford Explorer, GMC Envoy, and Toyota 4Runner. For 2003, all now offer optional V8 engines and--with the exception of 4Runner--three rows of seats.
