Vehicle Highlights

Lighted power window switches and a battery-saver feature top 2003's short list of additions to Hyundai's compact sedan. Sonata offers base, GLS, and LX models. Base models offer a 4-cyl engine or a V6. GLS and LX come with the V6. Manual transmission is standard with both engines; the optional automatic has a manual shift gate. Front side airbags are standard. GLS and LX have standard 4-wheel disc brakes; ABS is optional on all models. Optional traction control is exclusive to GLS and LX. This South Korean automaker's basic warranty is among the industry's longest: 5-years/60,000-mi. bumper-to-bumper, 10/100,000 powertrain. Sonata shares its mechanical components with the Kia Optima. Hyundai owns Kia.

COMPETITION

Playing the roll of crossover utility vehicle in a segment of sedans and wagons gives Chrysler PT Cruiser a leg up on the competition. It offers versatility and eye-catching styling not found among compact cars and this year adds more power with the Turbo model.

Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix are new this year and are worth considering as Recommended SUV-like alternatives. Hyundai's Sonata earns recognition for offering impressive comfort, equipment, and warranty coverage at a reasonable price. The all-wheel drive Subaru Outback/Legacy is another Recommended selection, thanks to a superb AWD system and roomy cargo holds.
