2003 Honda Pilot Review
Honda borrows the basic design of the popular MDX from its upscale Acura division for this new midsize SUV. Pilot starts $8800 under the MDX and has different styling. But the two share a basic chassis, V6 engine, 5-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive system. Pilot's body is slightly shorter than MDX's, but the taller, wider Honda seats eight vs. MDX's seven and has 8.8 cu ft more cargo volume. It also has softer suspension tuning and 16-inch wheels vs. 17s. Pilot offers LX and upscale EX models. Standard are antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and front side airbags; rear or curtain side airbags are unavailable. The AWD system does not have low-range gearing, but can be set via a dashboard button to split power evenly front to rear. Pilot has a one-piece rear liftgate without separate-opening glass. The 2nd- and 3rd-row seats are 60/40 split folding benches. The EX accounts for the majority of Pilot sales and adds to the LX standard alloy wheels, keyless entry, power driver seat, automatic climate control, and upgraded audio with steering-wheel controls. Extra-cost EX exclusives include leather upholstery and a navigation system or DVD rear-seat entertainment system.
Competition
New to the class this year, Honda Pilot has taken the lead as a Best Buy. It offers ample cargo space, seating for eight passengers, all-wheel drive with a locking rear differential for added traction, and above-average refinement. Toyota Highlander is our other Best Buy, chosen for its on-road competence, convenience, and attractive pricing and design.

Our Recommended choices feature more-traditional SUVs: Ford Explorer, GMC Envoy, and Toyota 4Runner. For 2003, all now offer optional V8 engines and--with the exception of 4Runner--three rows of seats.
News
Pilot found some 52,000 takers in its first months on the market, well on track with a forecast rate of 80,000 per year. Honda builds Pilots and Odysseys at the same plant in Canada. By shifting some of the Odyssey production to Honda's new Alabama plant, more Pilots can be built at the Canadian plant. However, supplies are still tight and demand apparently quite strong, so don't expect discounts anytime soon. You also shouldn't expect major near-term design or engineering changes, as Pilot is only in its first model year.
