Vehicle Highlights
A new model with an old name is the key 2003 addition to the original ponycar. Mustang comes as a fastback coupe or a convertible with power top and glass rear window. Base versions have a 190-hp V6. Sharing versions of a 4.6-liter V8 are three models: the GT with 260 hp; the new Mach 1 with 305 hp; and the SVT Cobra, which has a supercharger and 390 hp. All but the Cobra are available with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. The Cobra comes only with a 6-speed manual and is the sole Mustang with independent rear suspension. All Mustangs have 4-wheel disc brakes. ABS coupled with traction control is standard except on the Base Deluxe model, where it's optional, and on the Base Standard model, where it's unavailable. Reviving a Mustang badge from 1969, the Mach 1 arrived in late calendar-year 2002 as a limited-production coupe. It has a lowered suspension and unique trim inside and out, highlighted by a functional "shaker" hood scoop connected directly to the engine. New options for '03 include a Pony appearance package for V6 models, a Centennial package for GT, and a 10th Anniversary package for Cobra.
COMPETITION
Our only Best Buy in this class is the fun-to-drive Acura RSX. It offers plenty of thrills for the money with impressive acceleration and great handling.
Formerly a Best Buy, Volkswagen New Beetle still features interesting blend of styling, comfort, performance, and economy. If raw performance is what you are after, we Recommend Toyota Celica. This car offers a lot of bang for your buck, but, like all sporty coupes, may not be the greatest daily driver. New to the class is the Mini Cooper, a well-mannered small car, with sophisticated driving dynamics spoiled only by a ride that too easily becomes harsh on imperfect pavement. Because it is new and available in limited numbers, dealers are not discounting.
