2003 Ford Mustang Review
A new model with an old name is the key 2003 addition to the original ponycar. Mustang comes as a fastback coupe or a convertible with power top and glass rear window. Base versions have a 190-hp V6. Sharing versions of a 4.6-liter V8 are three models: the GT with 260 hp; the new Mach 1 with 305 hp; and the SVT Cobra, which has a supercharger and 390 hp. All but the Cobra are available with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. The Cobra comes only with a 6-speed manual and is the sole Mustang with independent rear suspension. All Mustangs have 4-wheel disc brakes. ABS coupled with traction control is standard except on the Base Deluxe model, where it's optional, and on the Base Standard model, where it's unavailable. Reviving a Mustang badge from 1969, the Mach 1 arrived in late calendar-year 2002 as a limited-production coupe. It has a lowered suspension and unique trim inside and out, highlighted by a functional "shaker" hood scoop connected directly to the engine. New options for '03 include a Pony appearance package for V6 models, a Centennial package for GT, and a 10th Anniversary package for Cobra.
Competition
Our only Best Buy in this class is the fun-to-drive Acura RSX. It offers plenty of thrills for the money with impressive acceleration and great handling.

Formerly a Best Buy, Volkswagen New Beetle still features interesting blend of styling, comfort, performance, and economy. If raw performance is what you are after, we Recommend Toyota Celica. This car offers a lot of bang for your buck, but, like all sporty coupes, may not be the greatest daily driver. New to the class is the Mini Cooper, a well-mannered small car, with sophisticated driving dynamics spoiled only by a ride that too easily becomes harsh on imperfect pavement. Because it is new and available in limited numbers, dealers are not discounting.
News
Mustang calendar-year sales eased 2.6 percent in 2001 vs. '00, but the difference was fewer than 4500 units. In the first half of 2002, however, demand was down a more substantial 18 percent, a loss of close to 16,000.

While 2003's new Mach 1 and Pony models look to Mustang's past, Ford is looking ahead to an all-new Mustang, the first since the current "SN95" models bowed for 1994 (albeit with engineering roots in distant 1979). Though the coming "S197" was slated for an April 2004 debut in time for Mustang's 40th birthday party, Ford's financial problems have pushed it back about six months. Even so, there will be the inevitable 40th Anniversary special, but it will be based on the outgoing car, say industry insiders.

The replacement S197 uses a modified version of the corporate "DEW98" platform that already serves the Ford Thunderbird and Lincoln LS/Jaguar S-Type sedans. That assures classic rear-wheel drive continues. It also suggests independent rear suspension for all models, not just the top-line high-performance Cobras. V6 and V8 coupes and convertibles will stay on the menu, but all versions will likely get standard 6-speed manual transmission and a first-time 5-speed automatic option. Styling will naturally retain traditional Mustang cues, but the overall shape is said to be more dynamic.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Mach 1, man. SVT Cobra cpe Class Average
5 7 8 10 5.9

V6 sprightly enough, especially with manual transmission. GT's V8 is robust with either transmission; Mach 1 faster still. Cobra's supercharged thrust is spine-compressing and virtually lag-free, though shifter suffers notchy movement.
Fuel Economy

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Mach 1, man. SVT Cobra cpe Class Average
5 4 3 2 6.1

Test manual-transmission GTs averaged 15.5 mpg, a Mach 1 16.3 with more highway miles. Expect slightly better with V6. No opportunity yet to measure Cobra mileage. Base and GT models use regular-grade fuel. Ford recommends 91-octane premium for Mach 1 and Cobra.
Ride Quality

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Mach 1, man. SVT Cobra cpe Class Average
3 2 2 2 3.5

Base models fairly compliant, GT and Mach 1 firmer but not punishing, though aged suspension on both is poor at absorbing large bumps. Cobra's independent rear suspension aids composure over rough surfaces, but taut springs and low-profile tires still make for a stiff ride.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Mach 1, man. SVT Cobra cpe Class Average
6 7 8 9 7.7

Plenty of lateral grip and good steering feel, but Base and GT tend to get skittish in bumpy corners where the Mach 1 and Cobra do a better job of staying on course. Traction control essential to help minimize tire slip in these rear-wheel-drive cars. Brake performance and feel escalate from adequate on base models to impressive on Cobra.
Quietness

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Mach 1, man. SVT Cobra cpe Class Average
3 2 2 2 3.2

Full-throttle acceleration brings lots of V6 engine ruckus and, on V8s, engine and exhaust roar. Convertibles aren't uncomfortably noisy with the roof raised.
Controls

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Mach 1, man. SVT Cobra cpe Class Average
6 6 6 4 6

Legible gauges, easy-to-use controls. However, Cobra's shift lever is shaped differently from that in other Mustangs and is difficult to use without stretching. Build quality is nothing special, and hard plastic dominates interior panels.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Mach 1, man. SVT Cobra cpe Class Average
4 4 4 4 4.7

Good room for two. Seats in Base and GT are too soft for best comfort or support. Mach 1 seats a good blend of comfort and support. Cobra's buckets are narrow but firm and well-bolstered. Steering wheel mounted too close to driver for best positioning. Long doors a hassle in tight spaces. Rearward visibility limited--especially with the convertible's top up--but no worse than in most rivals.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Mach 1, man. SVT Cobra cpe Class Average
2 2 2 2 1.1

Inhospitable for adults. Entry/exit requires awkward crouching under low roof, squeezing between front seat and doorjamb.
Cargo Room

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Mach 1, man. SVT Cobra cpe Class Average
2 1 2 2 3

Small trunk, and convertible lacks coupe's folding rear seatback.
Value within Class

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Mach 1, man. SVT Cobra cpe Class Average
5 5 5 5 6.1

Mustang outlasted the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird because of its wider appeal. Its reach broadens for '03 with the Corvette-baiting Cobra and nostalgic Mach 1. Any Mustang is an impractical car, but easily fulfills its core mission: deliver appropriate performance and looks for a reasonable price.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
