Best with the brawny V10, adequate with the base gas V8. Automatic transmissions responsive and smooth. We have not yet driven the new 6.0-liter turbodiesel which replaced the 7.3 at midyear.

We haven't done full tests, but economy with gas engines should range from 9-13 mpg depending on vehicle weight and drive system. Turbodiesel will likely be better.

Fine for big, tall pickups with solid-axle suspensions. Steering a bit numb on-center, but responsive enough. Hard stops swift and undramatic even on slick roads. Electronic shift-on-the-fly 4WD a plus for convenience, but not usable on dry pavement.

Wind noise rises sharply at highway speeds in these boxy rigs, but tire noise isn't annoying and the gas engines are restrained, though not hushed, except at high rpm.

Same as an F-150: Radio and climate controls are mounted high, but are out of easy reach for the driver. Other controls are handy, gauges clear. Materials range from stark to fairly fancy depending on trim level and options.

Standard bench seat has space aplenty for three big guys, but is too hard and flat for long-haul comfort. Available twin captain-chair buckets are more relaxing. Step-in varies with model, but they're all high; some 4WD versions require a Paul Bunyan stretch, though side steps are available. Commanding visibility in all models.

SuperCabs have fine head room but very limited leg room, and the seatback is too upright to be comfortable. Crew Cabs offer vast head and leg room with a comfortable seat wide enough for three adults.

HD Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra extended cabs offer better rear-passenger accommodations, and are at least equal in most ways and maybe a bit more refined and comfortable. But these Fords have all the power, toughness, and comfort to satisfy big-truck users.
