Vehicle Highlights

A high-performance turbocharged model and a minor facelift are new for Neon in 2003. Basic-transportation SE and SXT models anchor the line for sporty R/T and new SRT-4 versions. All get fresh front and rear styling and a new steering-wheel design. SE, SXT, and R/T use a 2.0-liter 4-cyl engine. The R/T has 150 hp, the others 132. SRT-4 has a 215-hp 2.4-liter turbo 4 cyl. R/T and SRT-4 come only with manual transmission. SE and SXT offer manual or optional automatic. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard on R/T and SRT-4, optional on the others. Traction control is no longer available. Front side airbags are optional. The SE has 14-inch steel wheels, the SXT has 15-inch alloys, the R/T 16-inch alloys, and the SRT-4 17-inch alloys. SRT-4 gets unique body trim, including a functional hood scoop and basket-handle rear spoiler, plus specially tuned sport suspension and brakes, sport seats, and exclusive interior details, such as a 160-mph speedometer. An in-dash CD changer is a new SXT option and R/T standard feature for '03.

COMPETITION

Honda Civic continues to be the car to beat with a wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. Also a Best Buy, Ford Focus doesn't offer the refinement of the Civic, but doesn't cost as much either.

Topping the crowded Recommended list are Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys. However, they are among the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the redesigned but still reliable Toyota Corolla, the sporty Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege. Each of these is a valid alternative to a Best Buy if price is your major concern.
