Vehicle Highlights
Standard 4-wheel disc brakes highlight additions to the 2003 Durango as Dodge readies a redesigned replacement as a 2004 model. The 2003 Durango is sized between midsize and full-size SUVs and offers three rows of seats. Sport, SLT, and SLT Plus models come with a 4.7-liter V8. A 5.9-liter V8 is standard on the R/T model and optional on other models. Both engines use automatic transmission; the 4.7 a 5 speed, the 5.9 a 4 speed. Durango is available with rear-wheel drive or 4WD. The base 4WD system must be disengaged on dry pavement. A system that can remain engaged on dry pavement is standard on R/T and optional on SLTs. The 4WD system on the Sport does not include low-range gearing; the others do. Rear ABS is standard; 4-wheel ABS is optional. The R/T has 17-inch alloy wheels, the other models 16s. Front bucket seats and a 3-passenger 2nd-row bench seat are standard. A 3-passenger 3rd-row seat is optional on Sport models, standard on the others. The SLT can be ordered with a front bench seat for up to 8-passenger capacity. Head-protecting curtain side airbags that cover the front and 2nd-row seats are optional.
The redesigned Durango goes on sale in November 2003. It's larger than the outgoing version, and trades body-on-frame construction for a unibody design. It will offer two V8s and a V6.
COMPETITION
New to the class this year, Honda Pilot has taken the lead as a Best Buy. It offers ample cargo space, seating for eight passengers, all-wheel drive with a locking rear differential for added traction, and above-average refinement. Toyota Highlander is our other Best Buy, chosen for its on-road competence, convenience, and attractive pricing and design.
Our Recommended choices feature more-traditional SUVs: Ford Explorer, GMC Envoy, and Toyota 4Runner. For 2003, all now offer optional V8 engines and--with the exception of 4Runner--three rows of seats.
