2003 Dodge Caravan Full Review
Date Published: 4/09/08
2003 Dodge Caravan Review
A power sunroof is optional for the first time on the 2003 version of America's best-selling minivan, which also trimmed its model line at midyear. All Caravans seat seven and have two sliding side doors. Regular-length versions drop their Sport trim level, leaving a lone SE model. The extended-length Grand Caravans drop their eL and eX versions.

Front-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive is available on Grand Caravans. Regular-length models use a 4-cyl engine or a 3.3-liter V6. Grands get the 3.3 V6 or a 3.8 V6. All use a 4-speed automatic transmission. ABS is optional on the regular-length SE and standard on other Caravans. Grand ES models and the AWD Grand Sport come with 4-wheel disc brakes. Front side airbags are optional. Curtain side airbags are unavailable.

Grands offer power operation for both side doors. Standard for the top-line Grand ES and optional on Grand Sport is a power liftgate. An available center console with internal power outlet can be placed between the front or 2nd-row seats. And the optional adjustable-height rear parcel shelf has pop-up storage dividers. The 3rd-row seats don't fold into the floor, but a 50-50 split 3rd-row bench is available. Each portion weighs 55 lb and can be removed, reclined, or folded flat.

The sunroof option is exclusive to Grand ES models. Grands also offer a DVD rear-seat entertainment system. Optional power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedals are new '03 options on all models. A tire-pressure monitor is available on ES versions. Caravan shares its design with the Chrysler Town & Country and Voyager.
Competition
Though the competition has heated up, we feel that Dodge Caravan is still one of the best minivans you can buy. It offers all of the creature comforts in a pleasing package at a fair price. Our other Best Buy is Honda Odyssey. It's sportier to drive, and it has a super-convenient flip-and-fold-away rear seat, but the ride can grow harsh at times.

Recommended Chevy Venture and Toyota Sienna are comparably priced and offer loads of neat features, but they can't match the road manners of our Best Buys. Mazda MPV makes it to the Recommended list this year as a reliable family hauler offering better fuel economy than competitors at a reasonable price. Also garnering Recommended ratings are the Chrysler Town & Country and Chrysler Voyager. Though they don't offer the Caravan's breadth of model choices, they are mechanically similar. Their entry-level models are a super value for the price.
News
Caravan and sister Chrysler minivans reportedly get a facelift for 2004 or '05. Sources don't see a full redesign until model-year 2006 or '07, but we think that could be pulled ahead to '05. Whenever the next generation appears, it should borrow some technical features from the new Chrysler Pacifica crossover, which uses a modified version of the next minivan platform. Look for a more sophisticated suspension to improve ride comfort, plus fold-flush rear seats and a stronger structure designed for higher government crash-test ratings than earned by current models.

Caravan sales inched up 1.2 percent in 2002, an undoubted relief for Dodge after the 15.3-percent year-to-year loss of calendar '01. Caravan remains the minivan sales leader, but its lead has been shrinking despite continued support from 0-percent financing, rebates and other incentives. With that and the arrival of fresh competition, Chrysler is likely going all out to speed its redesigned minivans to market, hence our prediction of a model-year '05 debut.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

SE, 4 cyl Grand Sport, 3.3 V6 Grand ES Grand ES AWD Class Average
2 4 5 5 4.1

Good--with the right engine. Weak 4 cyl feels even more lethargic than its 11.3-sec 0-60 mph time suggests. The 3.3 V6 is OK in regular-length model. Grands need the smooth, strong 3.8. The V6s work well with this automatic transmission, though we miss the manual-shift-facilitating AutoStick feature no longer available for 2003.
Fuel Economy

SE, 4 cyl Grand Sport, 3.3 V6 Grand ES Grand ES AWD Class Average
4 4 5 4 4

Extended-use-test 3.8-liter V6 AWD Grand Caravan averaged 17.1 mpg over 21,115 mi., which included lots of highway travel. Slightly lighter front-drive test version averaged 19.1 mpg. Overburdened 3.3 should average 15-17 mpg in Grand Caravans. Test 4-cyl SE averaged 19.8 in a mix of city/highway driving.
Ride Quality

SE, 4 cyl Grand Sport, 3.3 V6 Grand ES Grand ES AWD Class Average
5 7 7 7 5.5

Grands smooth out bumps better than shorter-wheelbase models, but all Caravans ride comfortably. You'll feel most pavement imperfections with the optional Sport Touring Group's suspension.
Steering/Handling/Braking

SE, 4 cyl Grand Sport, 3.3 V6 Grand ES Grand ES AWD Class Average
4 5 5 6 4.3

Caravans with 15-inch wheels and tires are modest but predictable handlers; 16-inch setups provide more grip and sharper response. Brakes are adequate, but pedal feel and stopping power are better on models with 4-wheel discs.
Quietness

SE, 4 cyl Grand Sport, 3.3 V6 Grand ES Grand ES AWD Class Average
4 6 6 7 5

Heavy crosswinds and 70-mph cruising elevate wind rush, and certain road surfaces bring out marked tire noise, but neither is prominent enough to disturb conversation.
Controls

SE, 4 cyl Grand Sport, 3.3 V6 Grand ES Grand ES AWD Class Average
7 7 7 7 6.1

Gauges unobstructed. Controls are easy to decipher, close to driver, but cupholders block in-dash CD changer. Either 2nd-row passenger can reach the rear climate controls.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

SE, 4 cyl Grand Sport, 3.3 V6 Grand ES Grand ES AWD Class Average
7 7 7 7 6

Low step-in height, wide doorways. Plenty of head, leg, shoulder room. Rear headrests obstruct outward vision slightly. Power-adjustable pedals allow shorter drivers to sit further from the steering-wheel airbag.
Room/Comfort (rear)

SE, 4 cyl Grand Sport, 3.3 V6 Grand ES Grand ES AWD Class Average
6 8 8 8 6.9

Generous knee, foot clearance in Grands. Regular-length version can be cramped in 2nd and 3rd rows. Override feature allows power side doors to be easily closed or opened by hand. And kudos for available integrated 2nd-row child-safety seats, and rear DVD and wireless-headphone entertainment systems.
Cargo Room

SE, 4 cyl Grand Sport, 3.3 V6 Grand ES Grand ES AWD Class Average
9 10 10 10 9.3

Regular-length is tight behind 3rd row. Split 3rd-row bench simple to remove, but no substitute for stowable seat. Handy power liftgate responds quickly to obstructions. Movable rear parcel shelf is clever, but has flimsy pop-up dividers.
Value within Class

SE, 4 cyl Grand Sport, 3.3 V6 Grand ES Grand ES AWD Class Average
7 9 10 10 5.9

Caravan is hard to beat for refinement, utility, and carlike road manners. Our extended-use test model did not experience the reliability woes that have nagged previous Dodge and Chrysler minivans. Don't buy a minivan without checking out a Caravan.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
