2003 Chrysler Sebring Full Review
Date Published: 9/16/08
2003 Chrysler Sebring Review
Chrysler's midsize line consists of sedans, convertibles, and coupes. The sedan and convertible share a Chrysler platform and use Chrysler powertrains. The coupe takes its platform and powertrains from Mitsubishi's Galant and Eclipse. In the biggest change to this line for 2003, the coupe gets revised styling inside and out and is available for the first time with front side airbags.

All Sebrings offer 4- and 6-cyl engines. All sedans and convertibles come only with automatic transmission except the GTC convertible, which offers a V6/manual combination. All coupes offer manual or automatic transmission. Chrysler's AutoStick automatic transmission with manual shift gate is available on the top-line Limited convertible and on V6 coupes. Head-protecting curtain side airbags are optional on sedans. Front torso side airbags are newly optional for coupes. The convertible has no side airbags. All models except the base coupe have 4-wheel disc brakes and offer ABS. The convertible is exclusive to the Sebring line, but sedans and coupes have Dodge Stratus counterparts. For '03, the coupe has new styling front and rear, plus a new dashboard and revised interior panels.
Competition
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced. Camry was new last year and Accord holds that honor this year.

Recommended models include the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, sporty Chrysler Sebring/Dodge Stratus twins, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. Despite relatively high prices, the refined Volkswagen Passat is also Recommended. Sedan and wagon models are offered with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and four-, six-, or class-exclusive eight-cylinder power. Budget-level interior materials and assembly disappointments aside, the Nissan Altima is Recommended for its impressive interior room, road manners, and reasonable price.
News
Chrysler Group has lately been making money again, but it still needs to pinch pennies. As a result, Sebring's planned redesign has been pushed back about 12 months, to model-year 2006, and the plans themselves redesigned. Instead of using a Chrysler-designed platform, the new models will be enlarged versions of Mitsubishi's next-generation Lancer. That subcompact is expected for '05 along with a redone Dodge Neon on the same regular-length foundation. The Sebring scenario will also apply to the related Dodge Stratus, but word is that coupes will be dropped from both lineups due to persistent sluggish sales. DaimlerChrysler owns a controlling 37-percent stake in Mitsubishi's Japanese parent. The revised midsize strategy reflects DC's desire to cut costs through greater underskin sharing among similar models regardless of brand.

Even so, Chrysler officials say the new Mitsubishi platform is flexible enough to spawn a variety of models with different external dimensions, wheelbase included. Indeed, some sources hint that a midsize wagon may in the cards, which implies a "junior Pacifica" for the Sebring line. Chrysler also says the redesign aims to make Sebring look less like Stratus despite another shared platform. We'll see.

Meantime, the current Sebring tallied 5.1-percent fewer sales in 2002, albeit after an 89.2-percent surge in calendar '01. Coupes accounted for most of the year-to-year slide, as sedans were essentially flat and convertibles were down just 2.8 percent, a loss of just 1265 units.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

LX sdn, V6 LXi cpe, V6 auto. GTC conv, man. Limited conv Class Average
6 6 6 5 5.2

V6 Sebrings have adequate power for most needs. Four-cylinder models are slower and noisier than the sixes. AutoStick lends a useful feature to V6 coupes and the Limited convertible.
Fuel Economy

LX sdn, V6 LXi cpe, V6 auto. GTC conv, man. Limited conv Class Average
5 6 5 5 5.3

Test manual-transmission 3.0 V6 coupe averaged 23.3 mpg. Equipped with the 2.7 V6 and automatic transmission, a test sedan averaged 18.3 mpg, a test LXi convertible 18.5. Test manual GTC averaged 20.4. All models use regular fuel.
Ride Quality

LX sdn, V6 LXi cpe, V6 auto. GTC conv, man. Limited conv Class Average
6 5 6 6 6.3

All Sebrings comfortably absorb most bumps. Coupes ride much better than their shorter-wheelbase Eclipse cousins, but still don't filter out bad pavement as well as Sebring sedans and convertibles, especially the LXi coupe with its 17-inch wheels. Sedans and convertibles suffer some float over dips and swells.
Steering/Handling/Braking

LX sdn, V6 LXi cpe, V6 auto. GTC conv, man. Limited conv Class Average
6 7 6 6 6.1

Quite confident in all models. Coupes slightly more nimble than sedans. Convertibles stable, secure, too. Braking is sure, with good pedal modulation. All models tested had ABS.
Quietness

LX sdn, V6 LXi cpe, V6 auto. GTC conv, man. Limited conv Class Average
5 5 4 4 5.5

Less-refined than top import rivals, but not inordinately loud. Mechanical noise, road roar, and wind rush reasonably well-managed.
Controls

LX sdn, V6 LXi cpe, V6 auto. GTC conv, man. Limited conv Class Average
7 6 7 7 6.5

Clear and readable. Best in sedan and convertible, but coupe's '03 redesign rids it of unnecessary design flourishes, leaving a contemporary layout with a higher-mounted climate system. Quality of materials competitive with most rivals; that was untrue of Sebring coupe before this year's revamp.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

LX sdn, V6 LXi cpe, V6 auto. GTC conv, man. Limited conv Class Average
6 4 5 5 5.9

Roomy, but taller passengers may want more head room in the coupe. Low roofline hampers entry/exit in coupe and top-up in the convertible. Larger outside mirrors would aid lane changes in all models, but only real blind spot is to rear quarters in convertibles with top up.
Room/Comfort (rear)

LX sdn, V6 LXi cpe, V6 auto. GTC conv, man. Limited conv Class Average
4 2 3 3 4.4

Head room is a bit snug, but leg and foot room is ample. Coupe's cushion is low and its seatback is too reclined. Three adults can fit in the sedan's back seat with a little squeezing. Unlike most of its breed, the convertible holds two adults comfortably.
Cargo Room

LX sdn, V6 LXi cpe, V6 auto. GTC conv, man. Limited conv Class Average
5 5 2 2 4.7

Average for the class, though few convertibles offer more. Coupe's trunklid hinges dip into luggage bay. Interior storage is adequate in coupe. Sedans have a small center console and lack rear-door map pockets.
Value within Class

LX sdn, V6 LXi cpe, V6 auto. GTC conv, man. Limited conv Class Average
8 4 7 7 6.2

Though Sebrings lack the polish of some import-brand rivals, prices are competitive. Sedans and convertibles have reasonably comfortable interiors, and the sedans qualify as relatively sporty family cars. All in all, though, the gem here is the roomy, stylish ragtop.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
