2003 Chevrolet Silverado HD Full Review
Date Published: 10/03/07
2003 Chevrolet Silverado HD Review
Silverado HDs share new front styling with their lighter-duty Silverado 1500/2500 siblings, and add optional satellite radio and rear-seat entertainment system for 2003. This report covers mainstay 3/4-ton 2500 and 1-ton 3500 pickups, though chassis-cab and chassis cutaway models are also offered.

Both HD Silverado series are available with rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. An electronic-shift transfer case (replacing a manual lever) is standard on 4WD LTs, optional on LSs. Both 2500 and 3500 come in a choice of regular cab, an extended cab with rear-hinged back half-doors, and a Crew Cab with four full-size front-hinged doors. All can be ordered with front bucket seats or a 40/20/40 split bench. The extended and Crew Cab include a three-person rear bench. HD 3500s come only with an eight-foot cargo box; 2500s offer a 6.5-foot box as well. All 3500s have dual rear wheels on each side.

All models have standard dual dashboard airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes; some offer GM's OnStar assistance system. Base engine is a 6.0-liter V8. Optional are an 8.1-liter V8 and 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8. The base engine teams with 5-speed manual transmission or optional 4-speed automatic with Tow/Haul mode. The two larger engines have a 6-speed manual or optional Allison 5-speed automatic with Engine Grade Braking, an electronic feature that makes an automatic downshift when descending steep slopes. Newly optional on LS and LT models for '03 are satellite radio, a rear-seat entertainment system for Crew Cabs, and power-extending camper mirrors. Silverado HD is similar to GMC Sierra HD.
Competition
With the advent of crossover vehicles, this segment has become less defined. Once the domain of work-related heavy-duty pickups, buyers are now demanding that their full-size trucks do double duty. Our Best Buys remain Chevy Silverado, Ford F-150, and GMC Sierra. These trucks offer a wide range of powertrain combinations, plenty of luxury accommodations, and ample towing power--though the GM twins are the only ones to offer full-time 4WD and convenient 4-wheel steering.

Big-rig-styled Dodge Ram matches the new Ford and GM models in most aspects but can't match their ride comfort or civility. We also like the expensive Toyota Tundra. What it lacks in brute strength, it more than makes up for with refined road manners.
News
These Silverados (and equivalent GMC Sierras) are still pretty new, and sources say they won't be redesigned again until model-year 2008. As heavyweight pickups change even less often than light-duty models, we don't expect the HD to generate much news in the new few years. GM has confirmed a hybrid-power option for some light-duty 2005 Silverados, but the HDs aren't likely to share it. Available information suggests the planned gas/electric powertrain would comprise the big rigs' hauling capacity. Besides, the hybrid's main purpose is to boost GM's overall truck fuel economy, so offering it in the higher-volume light-duty models makes more sense.

However, fuel-economy needs could see some HD gasoline engines adopting GM's new "Displacement on Demand" technology. This is a system that automatically shuts down half the cylinders in highway cruising and other situations that don't require full power. GM has said it wants to sell about 150,000 full-size DOD trucks starting in 2004, rising to some 1.5 million per year by '07. Given that goal, we think the HD line will be part of the program.

We don't have separate sales figures for the HD models, but total Silverado volume dropped 8.8 percent in 2002. Ford's F-Series was also down as a whole, and it's likely that heavy-duty models at both nameplates lost some sales from the previous year.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

2500HD Crew Cab, turbodiesel auto. Class Average
3 4.7

Adequate with base 6.0-liter V8, but 8.1-liter V8 and 6.6-liter turbodiesel are noticeably stronger. Six-speed manual transmission standard with 8.1 V8 and turbodiesel has 1st gear positioned in and down from normal pattern, leaving 2nd where 1st is normally located--which takes getting used to--though 1st is typically used only when hauling heavy loads.
Fuel Economy

2500HD Crew Cab, turbodiesel auto. Class Average
3 2.2

On a test 2500 Crew Cab with the Duramax diesel and automatic we averaged 14.2 mpg in all city driving. A 3500 Crew Cab with same powertrain averaged 13.7.
Ride Quality

2500HD Crew Cab, turbodiesel auto. Class Average
3 3.7

Trucky, to be sure, with considerable bouncing with an empty bed, but not bruising over bumps.
Steering/Handling/Braking

2500HD Crew Cab, turbodiesel auto. Class Average
3 3.3

Too big and ponderous to be sporty, but there's little body lean in turns. Brakes suffer a somewhat spongy feel, but stop the truck with little fanfare.
Quietness

2500HD Crew Cab, turbodiesel auto. Class Average
2 4.5

Wind and road noise are surprisingly subdued. Diesel engine noise intrudes only under full throttle.
Controls

2500HD Crew Cab, turbodiesel auto. Class Average
7 6.8

Clear gauges, convenient controls--except for the wiper switch, which is awkwardly combined with the turn signal lever.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

2500HD Crew Cab, turbodiesel auto. Class Average
9 8.5

Plenty of room, with comfortable seats. Ample seat travel even in regular cabs. High step-up, so entry/exit a chore.
Room/Comfort (rear)

2500HD Crew Cab, turbodiesel auto. Class Average
7 4.4

With sufficient leg space and a nicely reclined seatback, extended cabs offer best-in-class room and comfort, with true three-adult seating. Crew cabs have even more space, rivaling Ford's version. In all, high step-up hinders entry/exit.
Cargo Room

2500HD Crew Cab, turbodiesel auto. Class Average
7 4.8

Rear seat in extended cab folds up to create a good amount of storage space, though it lacks some of the features of competitors. Behind-seat room in regular cab beats Ford, trails Dodge.
Value within Class

2500HD Crew Cab, turbodiesel auto. Class Average
7 6.9

There's a lot to recommend these GM heavy-duty trucks, including strong engines, high hauling limits, comfortable rear-seat accommodations, and the availability of such features as a rear-seat entertainment system and GM's OnStar system. They should top your list.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
NA = price note available, NC = no charge.
