2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Full Review
Date Published: 3/14/08
2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Review
Fresh front-end styling, a DVD video option, and a sporty midyear model are 2003 updates to these full-size pickups. This report covers the half-ton 1500-series Silverados, which offer regular, extended, and Crew Cab body styles. Extendeds have rear-hinged back doors that don't open independently of the fronts. Crew Cabs have four conventional doors. Both include a 3-person rear bench seat. All but regular cabs offer front bucket seats vs. a bench. Regulars and extendeds are available with conventional 6.5- and 8.1-ft Fleetside cargo beds or a 6.5-ft flare-fender Sportside box. Crew Cabs come only with the short Fleetside; a Fleetside box of plasticlike material is available with the extended cab.

Regulars and extendeds have a 4.3-liter V6 and offer 4.8- and 5.3-liter V8 options. Crew Cabs use a 6.0-liter V8. Crews and extendeds include automatic transmission with GM's Tow/Haul mode. Regulars offer manual or optional automatic. Rear-wheel-drive versions offer optional traction control. Two 4WD systems are available. The base setup must be disengaged on dry pavement. General Motors' Autotrac 4WD can be left engaged on dry pavement. All 4x4s include low-range gearing. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. The Ride Control Suspension option offers two levels of shock-absorber firmness to suit road or load. Optional for extendeds and Crew Cabs is GM Quadrasteer 4-wheel steering. It tightens the turning radius at low speeds by moving the rear wheels counter to the fronts. At higher speeds, it's designed to improve stability by turning all wheels in the same direction. A special flare-fender short box is included.

For 2003, Silverados get a revised grille among other cosmetic changes. Dual-zone climate control is newly standard. Crew Cabs add optional rear DVD entertainment, and XM satellite radio is newly available for most models. Top-line LT versions include OnStar assistance. Added midyear, the Silverado SS is a short-bed extended cab with a 345-hp 6.0 V8, all-wheel drive, 20-inch wheels, performance tires, and special trim. Silverados share a basic design with GMC Sierras, which include the luxury-oriented AWD Denali with standard Quadrasteer.
Competition
With the advent of crossover vehicles, this segment has become less defined. Once the domain of work-related heavy-duty pickups, buyers are now demanding that their full-size trucks do double duty. Our Best Buys remain Chevy Silverado, Ford F-150, and GMC Sierra. These trucks offer a wide range of powertrain combinations, plenty of luxury accommodations, and ample towing power--though the GM twins are the only ones to offer full-time 4WD and convenient 4-wheel steering.

Big-rig-styled Dodge Ram matches the new Ford and GM models in most aspects but can't match their ride comfort or civility. We also like the expensive Toyota Tundra. What it lacks in brute strength, it more than makes up for with refined road manners.
News
GM's biggest pickups won't be redesigned for another 5 years, say industry insiders, so current models will have to make do with various interim updates. One that GM has already confirmed involves a hybrid-power option for select 2004 Silverados. The related GMC Sierra offers it starting late this year. The system is a so-called "mild hybrid" in which a starter/generator temporarily shuts off the gasoline engine on coming to a stop, then provides near-instantaneous restarts on pressing the accelerator. GM is also planning "Displacement on Demand" engines that shut down half their cylinders for better fuel economy in highway cruising and other situations where full power isn't needed. A DOD engine may be part of the new hybrid system, as GM projects up to 20 percent better fuel economy for such a powertrain vs a conventional one.

GM definitely wants to be America's leading seller of hybrid-power vehicles, promising to move over 1 million such cars and trucks per year by late decade. Motives include improving corporate average fuel economy, forging a green image among eco-minded consumers--and countering Japanese hybrid models.

Chevy has lately run TV ads promoting Silverado's 4-wheel "Quadrasteer" system, mainly because demand for the costly option has been sluggish. This leads us to think that Quadrasteer will not spread throughout the Silverado line, as might be expected.

Silverado sales slipped 8.8 percent in 2002, thus erasing part of the 11.5-percent year-to-year gain of calendar '01. The rival Ford F-Series was down too, but still beat Silverado by over 161,000 units. However, GM remains tops in total big-pickup sales, with Silverado/Sierra besting Ford by almost 41,000 units in '02.

Base reg. cab 2WD, V6 LS ext. cab 2WD, 4.8 V8 LT ext. cab 4WD, 5.3 V8 LS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
4 5 6 6 4.7

In Silverado or Sierra, the V6 often struggles. V8s have enough power for most situations. We recommend them. They're helped by a smooth, alert automatic transmission whose useful Tow/Haul mode adjusts shift points for best performance with heavy loads. Traction control and Autotrac 4WD are class exclusives with great appeal. Test Silverado SS did an impressive 7.2 sec 0-60 mph, and delivered strong passing punch. Similarly powered Sierra Denali should be as quick.
Fuel Economy

Base reg. cab 2WD, V6 LS ext. cab 2WD, 4.8 V8 LT ext. cab 4WD, 5.3 V8 LS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
3 2 2 2 2.2

Par for the class. Test 2WD regular cab with 4.8-liter V8 averaged 16.8 mpg in mostly highway driving. Test 4WD extended cab with 5.3 V8 averaged 13.7 mpg. Test 6.0 Crew Cab returned just 7.2 mpg in pure city driving; expect slightly higher with more highway use. Test SS and Sierra Denalis averaged 13.3-14.5 mpg in city/highway mix. All models had automatic transmission. All engines use regular fuel.
Ride Quality

Base reg. cab 2WD, V6 LS ext. cab 2WD, 4.8 V8 LT ext. cab 4WD, 5.3 V8 LS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
3 4 4 4 3.7

Generally more compliant than equivalent Ford F-150s, but still stiff and bouncy except on glass-smooth surfaces. And as with any pickup, the tail stutters some over bumps with an empty bed.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base reg. cab 2WD, V6 LS ext. cab 2WD, 4.8 V8 LT ext. cab 4WD, 5.3 V8 LS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
3 3 3 3 3.3

Good overall balance for big trucks--a match for any rival. Steering accurate, though less precise than Ford's. Available 4-wheel steering gives carlike maneuvering ease, especially in tight spots, and enhances towing stability.
Quietness

Base reg. cab 2WD, V6 LS ext. cab 2WD, 4.8 V8 LT ext. cab 4WD, 5.3 V8 LS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
5 5 5 5 4.5

Road, wind, engine noise unobjectionable and slightly lower than in comparable F-150s.
Controls

7 7 7 7 6.8

Gauge layout top-notch, as is switch placement and feel, though wipers deserve their own control instead of being crowded onto turn-signal lever. GM provides engine-hour-meter supplement to usual odometer.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base reg. cab 2WD, V6 LS ext. cab 2WD, 4.8 V8 LT ext. cab 4WD, 5.3 V8 LS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
7 9 9 9 8.5

Ample big-American space. Even regular cabs have good rearward seat travel, seatback recline, and adequate clearance to rear window. Supportive seats have integrated safety belts that most testers find comfortably positioned and easy to reach.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base reg. cab 2WD, V6 LS ext. cab 2WD, 4.8 V8 LT ext. cab 4WD, 5.3 V8 LS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
0 5 5 8 4.4

Good leg clearance and comfortably angled seatback make GM's extended cabs the most accommodating among full-size pickups. Crew Cabs are even more spacious and comfortable, a good match for F-150 SuperCrew and better than Dodge Ram Quad Cab.
Cargo Room

Base reg. cab 2WD, V6 LS ext. cab 2WD, 4.8 V8 LT ext. cab 4WD, 5.3 V8 LS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
1 5 5 7 4.8

Extended and crew cabs have ample in-cab storage with rear bench seat folded up, but lack bins, nets, or protective flooring. Behind-seat space in regular cab beats Ford and Toyota, trails Dodge.
Value within Class

Base reg. cab 2WD, V6 LS ext. cab 2WD, 4.8 V8 LT ext. cab 4WD, 5.3 V8 LS Crew Cab 4WD Class Average
7 9 10 10 6.9

GM leads the big-pickup field in 4WD sophistication, traction-control convenience, and now 4-wheel steering. These Chevy and GMC trucks also offer the best extended-cab rear-seat accommodations, and their crew cabs are as hospitable as any. Factor in performance and pricing, and Silverado and Sierra are easy Best Buys.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
