2003 Chevrolet Malibu Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2003 Chevrolet Malibu Review
Antilock brakes are optional instead of standard for 2003 on the base version of Malibu. The smaller of Chevrolet's two midsize sedans slots below Impala in size, price, and market position. Malibu has front bucket seats for 5-passenger capacity; Impala can seat six. Malibu offers base and LS models, both with a V6 and automatic transmission. ABS remains standard on LS, but is now a $400 base-model option. Front side airbags are unavailable.
Competition
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced. Camry was new last year and Accord holds that honor this year.

Recommended models include the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, sporty Chrysler Sebring/Dodge Stratus twins, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. Despite relatively high prices, the refined Volkswagen Passat is also Recommended. Sedan and wagon models are offered with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and four-, six-, or class-exclusive eight-cylinder power. Budget-level interior materials and assembly disappointments aside, the Nissan Altima is Recommended for its impressive interior room, road manners, and reasonable price.
News
Previewed at last winter's Detroit Auto Show, the redesigned 2004 Malibu shares its front-drive Epsilon platform with latest 9-3 from GM-owned Saab. Of course, the Malibu will cost far less than the Saab, again slotting below Impala on Chevy's price ladder. Besides a conventional 4-dr with angular new styling and slightly more interior space, the '04 offers a new "extended sedan" called Malibu Maxx. It's a hatchback with a sedan-like profile and a 6-inch longer wheelbase. As on some minivans and SUVs, the Maxx rear seat slides back and forth for extra rear leg room or cargo space. Both body styles include a 60/40 split-fold rear seat. Maxx options are expected to include rear DVD entertainment and a class-exclusive rear-seat sunroof. The Maxx looks a smart move, as many buyers crave the room and versatility of a midsize wagon but don't like the uncool wagon image. We'll know soon enough how smart it is. Malibu reinstates 4-cyl power for '04 with the 140-hp 2.2-liter "Ecotec" engine that powers some Saturns and other GM cars. A new 3.5-liter version of GM's familiar pushrod V6 is available. Both team with 4-speed automatic transmission. Well have more details shortly, so keep checking back with us.

Despite 0-percent financing and other incentives, Malibu sales were down again in 2002, sliding 4 percent after the previous year's 14.8-percent drop.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

LS Class Average
5 5.2

Strong off the line and around town, but not at highway speeds. Also not as smooth as Japanese rivals. Transmission doesn't always downshift quickly for passing.
Fuel Economy

LS Class Average
5 5.3

Recent test car averaged an unimpressive 19 mpg in a city/highway driving mix. GM recommends regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

LS Class Average
6 6.3

Chassis irons out most pavement well enough, but suspension and tires thump loudly over ruts and potholes.
Steering/Handling/Braking

LS Class Average
6 6.1

Feels maneuverable, secure in normal driving, but aggressive cornering brings on marked tire scrub and body lean and makes steering feel slow and vague. Stopping power adequate, pedal modulation good with ABS, but making the safety-enhancing ABS optional for the base model is an ill-advised way for Chevy to cut list price.
Quietness

LS Class Average
6 5.5

Wind and road noise are high enough to keep these cars from qualifying as serene long-distance cruisers.
Controls

LS Class Average
7 6.5

Instruments unobstructed, stalks for wipers and headlamps convenient, audio and climate controls large and accessible. Tasteful blend of materials gives a surprisingly upscale feel.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

LS Class Average
5 5.9

Generous head room and leg room. Firm, nicely contoured seats. Thin pillars, large outside mirrors provide good visibility, but high rear parcel shelf impedes vision astern. Most rivals offer front side-airbag protection that Malibu lacks.
Room/Comfort (rear)

LS Class Average
4 4.4

Good leg room with front seats less than halfway back, though cushion is flat and uncomfortable. Head room sufficient for those under 6-ft tall.
Cargo Room

LS Class Average
6 4.7

Large trunk has a flat floor, large opening, near-bumper-level sill. Interior storage space is generous.
Value within Class

LS Class Average
8 6.2

It's no cut-rate Camry, but Malibu delivers a fine blend of utility, driving ease, and features at an attractive price.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
