Vehicle Highlights
Base versions of Chevrolet's smallest cars lose standard antilock brakes for 2003, but get revised styling and features, including front side airbags as a first-time option. Cavalier offers coupes and sedans in base, LS, and top-line LS Sport trim. For 2003, base and LS join LS Sport with an overhead-cam 2.2 4-cyl engine, replacing a less-potent overhead-valve 4 cyl. However, ABS becomes a $400 option for base models. It remains standard on LS and LS Sport. The new front side airbags, available linewide, provide torso as well as head protection. Other new options include General Motors' OnStar system for LS and LS Sport, and XM satellite-radio service with 100-channel digital receiver. Added as standard are rear center 3-point seatbelt, LATCH-system rear child-seat anchors, and a 60/40 folding rear seat. Revised styling adds 1.8 inches to overall length; other dimensions are unchanged. LS Sports have a firmer, handling-oriented suspension; 16-inch alloy wheels instead of steel 14s or 15s; and sporty body add-ons including rear spoiler. Pontiac's Sunfire shares this basic design, but no longer offers sedan models.
COMPETITION
Honda Civic continues to be the car to beat with a wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. Also a Best Buy, Ford Focus doesn't offer the refinement of the Civic, but doesn't cost as much either.
Topping the crowded Recommended list are Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys. However, they are among the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the redesigned but still reliable Toyota Corolla, the sporty Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege. Each of these is a valid alternative to a Best Buy if price is your major concern.
