2003 Cadillac DeVille Full Review
Date Published: 9/18/08
2003 Cadillac DeVille Review
All versions of Cadillac's largest car now have a tire-pressure monitor, with some equipment juggling rounding out the 2003 changes. DeVille comes in Base and DHS models with a bench front seat, and as the sportier DTS with front buckets. All use a V8 that makes 300 hp in DTS, 275 in the others. All have a 4-speed automatic transmission, traction control, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and load-leveling suspension. An antiskid system is standard on DTS, optional elsewhere. Front side airbags that cover the head and torso are standard. Rear side airbags are a $295 option on Base and DHS, but for '03 are available on the DTS only as part of a $2080 Premium Luxury option.

Infrared Night Vision is optional on DHS and DTS, and rear-obstacle detection is optional on all. GM's OnStar assistance system is standard and is expanded this year to include over-the-phone navigation services. Newly available on the Base model and continuing as an option on the other DeVilles is a separate navigation system with a 6.5-inch dashboard screen. It incorporates voice recognition and can play entertainment DVDs with the transmission in Park. The optional XM satellite radio offers local programming plus 100 exclusive channels for a monthly fee.
Competition
With wide price ranges and numerous body configurations, this diverse segment has two clear Best Buy choices--the refined Lexus LS 430 and the unique Audi A6. The LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at around $55,000, while the A6 earns Best Buy status for its blend of space, performance, design sophistication, powertrain choices, and workmanship at prices below those of most rivals.

We Recommend the Acura RL--a steal at around $45,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille.
News
DeVille sales dropped 11.1 percent in 2002 after a 9.7-percent year-to-year loss in calendar '01. The rival Lincoln Town Car was down a similar amount and likely for the same reason: a dwindling audience for Detroit-traditional luxury sedans.

Sources still expect a fully redesigned DeVille for 2006, but now say it might switch to rear-wheel drive. Earlier, it appeared the replacement would stay with front drive to maximize interior space and winter-weather handling, factors deemed important to DeVille buyers. Now it seems Cadillac is having second thoughts. That's because a rear-drive model could borrow much from the Seville-replacing 2005 STS, which will use a stretched version of the rear-drive Sigma platform that underpins Cadillac's entry-level CTS sedan and upcoming '04 SRX crossover. Then again, GM is devising a new platform for large front-drive cars like the redesigned 2005 Buick LeSabre, so there's no reason for DeVille to go rear drive unless the number-crunchers say otherwise.

Whatever the final answer, the next DeVille should be badged DLS or DTS depending on model. It will definitely get the updated "Gen II" version of Cadillac's respected Northstar V8, plus edgier styling and all sorts of creature comforts.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base DHS DTS w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 7 6.5

Strong in all models: about 7 sec 0-60 mph. Transmission is smooth and responsive.
Fuel Economy

Base DHS DTS w/nav. sys. Class Average
3 3 3 4.1

Test models averaged 14.6-16.7 mpg. Cadillac recommends 87-octane fuel for all.
Ride Quality

Base DHS DTS w/nav. sys. Class Average
9 9 8 8.2

Comfortable and absorbent, though sharp bumps sometimes come through with a snap. Overall, just shy of top luxury imports.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base DHS DTS w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 7 6.6

DTS's handling holds its own against imported luxury sedans. Base, DHS are competent, but with smaller tires, not so athletic. Good stopping power, but brake-pedal feel is mushy to some testers.
Quietness

Base DHS DTS w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 8 8 7.8

Wind and road noise hushed. Powertrain is smooth and refined.
Controls

Base DHS DTS w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 6 5.7

Base model comes with digital instrumentation. DHS and DTS come with analog gauges, which we prefer, though both are legible. Most controls are large, clearly labeled. Night Vision projects onto windshield a small, fuzzy black-and-white image of heat-generating objects down the road; doesn't interfere with normal vision and can be dimmed or switched off. Navigation system fairly well-integrated, but takes time to learn and screen readability compromised by smudges and bright sunlight. Cabin materials, workmanship tops among domestic brands, though the best imports are better overall.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base DHS DTS w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 9 9 8.1

Few sedans are more spacious or comfortable, but a middle rider will feel squeezed. DHS/DTS standard "massaging" seats and optional air-bladder adaptive seats don't enhance comfort much.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base DHS DTS w/nav. sys. Class Average
9 9 9 7.6

Plenty of leg and head room. Firm, generous cushion. Wide enough for three adults. Doors open wide for easy exit.
Cargo Room

Base DHS DTS w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6 4.8

Four-golf-bag trunk opens at bumper level. Good interior storage space.
Value within Class

Base DHS DTS w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 8 8 5.3

Spacious and powerful, DeVille brims with space-age gizmos, and is priced below most V8 luxury rivals. Affluent younger buyers still favor imports, but this big Cadillac's virtues make it worth considering.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
