2003 Audi A4 Review
Addition of a convertible keynotes 2003 for Audi's best-selling line. A4 comes in sedan, Avant wagon, and new Cabriolet convertible body styles. The 1.8T versions use a turbo 4-cyl engine, the 3.0 versions a V6. Sedans and convertibles come with front-wheel drive. Standard on Avants and available for sedans is Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system. Manual transmission or a conventional 5-speed automatic are offered with quattro. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard on convertibles and front-wheel-drive 3.0 sedans and is available on the front-drive 1.8T sedan. The CVT provides variable drive ratios, plus six preset "gears" selected from a shift gate or steering-wheel buttons. Cabriolets have a power folding top with heated glass rear window. Every A4 includes antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, antiskid system, and front side airbags. Sedans and wagons come with head-protecting curtain side airbags and offer optional rear torso side airbags. Convertibles have front side airbags that provide head and torso protection, plus rear support bars that pop up automatically to protect occupants in a rollover.

A navigation system is optional for V6 models. Available on all A4s is OnStar assistance with extra-cost in-car e-mail service. An optional Sport package bundles firmer suspension with performance tires on 17-inch wheels. Among new options for '03 are a power driver seat for 1.8Ts and steering-wheel audio/climate controls for 3.0s. Leather seat inserts become standard for 3.0 models, optional for 1.8Ts. Full leather is available for V6 models.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has its benchmark in the Lexus ES 300. It blends comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. ES 300 manages to offer a little more luxury than others in the class.

We Recommend the Acura TL, Audi A4, and new Infiniti G35. All offer comfort, speed, and nimble handling at attractive prices. The sporty and Euro-flavored BMW 3-Series is Recommended as a rear-drive alternative. The "3" has enough bodystyles and engine choices to suit anyone. At the other end of the near-luxury spectrum is the posh and comfortable Buick Park Avenue--an old-school luxo-cruiser from Detroit.
News
The A4 scored a second straight year-to-year sales gain in 2002, up a stout 24 percent after 2001's modest 3.7-percent increase. The imminent S4 sedan and wagon complete this line's design overhaul, at least for now. These early 2004 models pack a 340-bhp version of Audi's 4.2-liter V8 instead of the previous S4s' 250-hp twin-turbo 2.7 V6. A 6-speed manual transmission remains standard, but a 6-speed automatic with manual shift gate is newly optional. Other technical upgrades include bigger brakes, quicker steering, 18-inch wheels, high-speed tires, and a lowered suspension with more lightweight aluminum components and uprated springs, shock absorbers and anti-roll bars. Visual differences from lesser A4s involve a modified grille, aluminum-clad door mirrors, modest rear spoiler, and dual exhaust outlets, plus bi-xenon headlamps. Interior changes include special gauges and trim, Nappa leather upholstery, and 12-way Recaro-brand power sport front seats. Pricing isn't available yet, but Audi says the S4 sedan will start in the mid-$40,000 area. Based on Audi statements and European road tests, expect strong 0-60 mph performance of around 5.5 sec.

Meantime, European sources say Audi is moving ahead with a first-ever A4 coupe based on the new Cabriolet. Expect 1.8T, V6, and maybe S4 versions. No firm word on timing, but a mid-2004 introduction seems likely. After that, the A4 line should see mostly detail yearly changes until the next redesign, which reportedly happens around 2007.

In Europe and other overseas markets, Audi sells a smaller-than-A4 hatchback called A3. Audi recently confirmed that a redesigned A3 is coming to the U.S. about a year after a new-generation VW Golf/Jetta debut on the same basic platform. Details are unclear, but the U.S. A3 should be an '06 model with four doors and choice of 4-cyl 1.8T and VW 3.2-liter VR6 engines. The top-line version, to be called RS, reportedly boasts a 350-hp twin-turbo V6 and Audi's quattro all-wheel drive. As Audi's new entry-level models, A3s will cost less than comparable A4s, though we don't yet know how much less.

Acceleration

1.8T Avant w/Sport Pkg., man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 3.0 sdn w/quattro, man. 3.0 Cabriolet Class Average
6 5 7 6 6.1

About 80 percent of A4s are sold with quattro. Quattro A4s with 4 cyl and automatic transmission feel slightly underpowered. Manual-transmission quattro 1.8Ts are lively enough, while manual-transmission V6 quattros are satisfyingly quick. Lighter front-drive models feel spry with any transmission, though CVT versions are lazy from a stop. Test 1.8T CVT sedan did 8.6 sec 0-60 mph; test V6 CVT Cabrio did 7.8. Seamless CVT acts much like conventional automatic, but requires use of manual mode for best performance.
Fuel Economy

1.8T Avant w/Sport Pkg., man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 3.0 sdn w/quattro, man. 3.0 Cabriolet Class Average
6 5 5 5 5.1

Test 1.8T sedan averaged 24.8 mpg, test 1.8T Avant 21.5, both with manual transmission. Test V6 quattro sedans with manual transmission averaged 18.3-21 mpg. Audi says CVT is 10 percent more fuel efficient than conventional automatic transmission. With CVT, test 1.8T sedan averaged 20.9 mpg, test Cabrios 19.8-20.7. Audi recommends premium fuel for all A4s.
Ride Quality

1.8T Avant w/Sport Pkg., man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 3.0 sdn w/quattro, man. 3.0 Cabriolet Class Average
6 7 7 7 6.4

Standard suspension furnishes firm control, good bump absorption on most any surface. Stiffer Sport Package setup with low-profile 17-inch tires is somewhat less forgiving on broken pavement.
Steering/Handling/Braking

1.8T Avant w/Sport Pkg., man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 3.0 sdn w/quattro, man. 3.0 Cabriolet Class Average
7 7 7 7 7

All models a joy to drive quickly, and Sport Package versions relish challenging roads. Quattro gives all-weather advantage over A4's 2WD rivals. Steering nicely weighted and direct. Brakes very capable, with outstanding pedal modulation. Convertible shows impressively little body quivering on bumps.
Quietness

1.8T Avant w/Sport Pkg., man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 3.0 sdn w/quattro, man. 3.0 Cabriolet Class Average
6 6 7 7 6.1

Both powerplants purr at cruise, and V6 snarls nicely under full throttle. Low-profile 17-inch tires are noisy, but road rumble otherwise muted, so what wind rush there is gets noticed. Top up, Cabrio wind noise exceptionally low; top down, little buffeting, helped by optional wind-deflector screen.
Controls

1.8T Avant w/Sport Pkg., man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 3.0 sdn w/quattro, man. 3.0 Cabriolet Class Average
8 8 8 8 6.4

Clearly marked controls, well-lit gauges. Dual-zone automatic climate system overly complex, and one test A4 had difficulty maintaining the set temperature. Front center armrest blocks use of handbrake lever and console cupholder. Sophisticated cabin materials and design are class benchmarks. Convertible top completely automatic and powers up or down in 24 sec.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

1.8T Avant w/Sport Pkg., man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 3.0 sdn w/quattro, man. 3.0 Cabriolet Class Average
7 7 7 7 6.1

Firm, comfortable seats. Ample head and leg room, though wide central console cuts into knee space enough to annoy taller drivers. Visibility good to all corners; rear-obstacle-warning system a rare nicety in near-luxury class.
Room/Comfort (rear)

1.8T Avant w/Sport Pkg., man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 3.0 sdn w/quattro, man. 3.0 Cabriolet Class Average
4 4 4 3 3.8

Supportive, nicely contoured seat. Head and leg room not vast, but comparable to competitors. Cabriolet cramped for adults.
Cargo Room

1.8T Avant w/Sport Pkg., man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 3.0 sdn w/quattro, man. 3.0 Cabriolet Class Average
7 3 3 2 4.1

Sedan's roomy trunk has rather small opening that precludes loading large objects, but split folding rear seatbacks compensate some and strut-type lid hinges don't eat into luggage space. Avant is versatile with its extra volume, augmented by several handy cargo bins and nets. When it's down, convertible's top eats into already small trunk space; convertible's seatbacks don't fold, but there is a ski pass-through.
Value within Class

1.8T Avant w/Sport Pkg., man. 1.8T sdn, CVT 3.0 sdn w/quattro, man. 3.0 Cabriolet Class Average
6 7 7 5 4.8

The A4 matches or beats most any class rival for refinement, performance, features, and variety of body styles. BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo offer AWD, but no competitor matches Audi's impressive CVT.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
