2003 Acura RL Review
Revamped last year as a more driver-focused car, Honda's luxury-brand flagship sedan gets only cosmetic updates for 2003. The 3.5 RL comes with V6, 4-speed automatic transmission, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, antiskid/traction-control system, and front side airbags. Also standard are General Motors' OnStar service, leather/wood interior trim, power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, heated front seats with driver-seat memory, and a trunk-mounted CD changer. A touch-screen navigation system is the sole option and is priced as a separate model. Changes for 2003 include clear-lens taillamps, new-design wheels, revised color choices for paint and interior, and adoption of LATCH-system child-seat anchors.
Competition
With wide price ranges and numerous body configurations, this diverse segment has two clear Best Buy choices--the refined Lexus LS 430 and the unique Audi A6. The LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at around $55,000, while the A6 earns Best Buy status for its blend of space, performance, design sophistication, powertrain choices, and workmanship at prices below those of most rivals.

We Recommend the Acura RL--a steal at around $45,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille.
News
RL sales dropped 12.4 percent in calendar 2002 after a 27.7-percent year-to-year decline in '01. This isn't hard to explain. Where most class rivals have V8s, rear drive and "prestige" styling, Acura offers a V6, front drive, and fairly forgettable looks. So though solid and capable, the RL doesn't tempt many people to drive it, let alone buy it.

Acura dealers would love a more competitive flagship sedan--and they may get it in the 2004 model due to start sale later this year, though this may not be the full redesign that's been rumored for 2005-06. But even if it is, the RL would retain a front-drive V6 format. Honda is said to feel that a rear-drive V8 model wouldn't sell well enough to offset high development costs. Logic suggests the next RL will benefit from more expressive styling and a larger, stronger V6, likely a 300-hp 3.8, plus a 5-speed automatic transmission to replace today's 4-speed. Optional all-wheel drive is being rumored too, though it might not be available from day one. More details should surface soon, so keep checking back with us.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base Base w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6.5

Class-competitive power, lacking only V8-style midrange punch. Test car did 0-60 in 8.1 sec.
Fuel Economy

Base Base w/nav. sys. Class Average
4 4 4.5

Test RL averaged 15.9 mpg including fuel-eating performance tests. Acura recommends premium fuel.
Ride Quality

Base Base w/nav. sys. Class Average
9 9 7.1

Firm yet supple despite fairly taut chassis and higher-speed tires. Feels impressively solid over bad roads, too.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base Base w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 6.7

Quite agile for a luxury sedan, but it's no BMW 5-Series. Still, RL belies its size and mass with minimal body lean, responsive steering. Great brakes, too.
Quietness

Base Base w/nav. sys. Class Average
9 9 6.8

Little noise from any source at most any speed, save a pleasant but muted V6 growl in full-throttle acceleration.
Controls

Base Base w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 8 6.6

Handsome, intelligent dashboard design; only a few minor switches are not ideally placed. Optional navigation system does not absorb climate controls and thus does not complicate routine adjustments.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base Base w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 8 7.2

Well-planned, easily tailored driving position and clear all-around visibility. Ample space for adults. Comfortable seats.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base Base w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 5.5

Roomy enough for the class but not vast. Leg and knee room just OK with a front seat pushed right back, and head room limited for 6-footers.
Cargo Room

Base Base w/nav. sys. Class Average
3 3 3.9

Sets no class standard, but trunk is usefully shaped, easy to load.
Value within Class

Base Base w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 8 5.7

The RL deserves a 5-speed automatic transmission, but its road manners are class competitive and its V6 acceleration is fine, if not up to that of V8 rivals. Styling isn't cutting-edge, but this worthy car offers impressive refinement, quality, and value, plus a strong reliability record.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
