2003 Acura CL: Overview

The coupe cousin of Acura's TL sedan gains a 6-speed manual transmission, styling updates, and available OnStar service for 2003. Two models continue, both with a 3.2-liter V6. The base 225-hp 3.2 CL uses a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift feature. The 260-hp Type-S offers the automatic teamed with an antiskid system, or the new 6-speed manual with a limited-slip differential. Both CLs include antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, front side airbags, and sunroof. A satellite navigation system is the sole factory option and now includes OnStar's emergency assistance. The Type-S upgrades the base model with a firmer suspension and 17-inch wheels instead of 16s. Appearance changes for '03 involve new-design wheels, revised headlamps and taillights, body-color instead of bright grille surround and door handles, and interior-trim revisions.

COMPETITION

This hotly contested segment has its benchmark in the Lexus ES 300. It blends comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. ES 300 manages to offer a little more luxury than others in the class.

We Recommend the Acura TL, Audi A4, and new Infiniti G35. All offer comfort, speed, and nimble handling at attractive prices. The sporty and Euro-flavored BMW 3-Series is Recommended as a rear-drive alternative. The "3" has enough bodystyles and engine choices to suit anyone. At the other end of the near-luxury spectrum is the posh and comfortable Buick Park Avenue--an old-school luxo-cruiser from Detroit.
