Vehicle Highlights

The midyear arrival of the first 8-cyl Volkswagen highlights 2002 for the German automaker's largest car. Passat sedans and wagons come in base GLS trim with a 170-hp turbo 4-cyl engine and in GLS V6 and GLX versions with a 190-hp V6. The new W8 sedan and wagon are named for their innovative 270-hp 8-cyl engine made up of two V4 modules. A 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift gate is standard on W8 and optional on other Passats in place of 5-speed manual. Due later is a W8 Sport Package with a 6-speed manual, plus firmer suspension and 17-inch tires instead of 16s. VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive is standard on W8s and available for automatic-transmission GLX and GLS V6 models. Other Passats have front-wheel drive with traction control. An antiskid system is exclusive to the W8. All models come with front side airbags, curtain side airbags, and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. GLX and W8 standard equipment includes leather upholstery, heated front seats, and walnut interior trim. For 2002, VW's bumper-to-bumper warranty increases to 4 years/50,000 mi. from 2/24,000, with powertrains covered for 5/60,000 instead of 10/100,000.

COMPETITION

Not really a sport-utility or minivan, the PT Cruiser has been well received by our staff. It offers versatility and eye-catching styling not found among compact cars. Its only drawback is tepid acceleration. The loaded Volkswagen Passat also makes it to the Best Buy list this year, despite relatively high prices.

Recommended choices include the vanilla Mazda 626 and the all-wheel drive Subaru Outback/Legacy. Both offer roomy alternatives at fair prices.
