2002 Volkswagen New Beetle Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2002 Volkswagen New Beetle Review
A sport model with more turbocharged power and a new transmission mark the 2002 New Beetle. This retro-styled 2-dr hatchback coupe recalls the original Beetle, but is built on the modern front-wheel-drive Jetta/Golf chassis. All models are powered by a 4-cyl engine: 2.0-liter and turbo 1.8-liter gasoline units, and a 1.9-liter turbodiesel. The 1.8 turbo in GLS Turbo and GLX models has 150 hp. The new Turbo S model has 180 hp and introduces to the line a 6-speed manual transmission. Other models have a 5-speed manual or optional automatic. Front side airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. Turbo models add traction control. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard on the Turbo S and optional on the GLS Turbo and GLX in place of standard 16s. The Turbo S also has slightly different front and rear trim and a stiffer suspension. All New Beetles have restyled wheels and wheel covers for '02. A new Lifestyle option package for the GLS Turbo includes Snap Orange paint with matching interior trim. Added midyear for select GLS models were Luna Green and Riviera Blue packages, both featuring special paint and equipment. VW's bumper-to-bumper warranty is now 4 years/50,000 mi. instead of 2/24,000, and the powertrain warranty is 5/60,000 instead of 10/100,000.
Competition
Our only Best Buy in this class, the Volkswagen New Beetle, offers interesting styling and a nice mix of comfort, performance, and economy. The New Beetle is the most practical and affordable in this class.

If raw performance is what you are after, we Recommend the fun-to-drive Acura RSX and Toyota Celica. These cars offer a lot of bang for your buck.
News
Fashions come and go, and not just in clothes. Though the New Beetle bowed as the must-have wheels of 1998, it was later eclipsed by the Chrysler PT Cruiser among young trendy types, who will likely be just as quick to embrace BMW's 2003 Mini as their new favorite in retro-chic cars. This fickleness is a big reason why New Beetle sales have been sliding since '99--down 2.7 percent year-to-year in calendar 2000 and another 18.9 percent in the first nine months of 2001.

But VW is fashion-wise, and will try to keep buyers interested in the Neo Bug by issuing more special models and options--starting in early '02 with the Turbo S. And if that doesn't cause a new outbreak of Beetlemania, VW will finally unwrap a much-anticipated convertible version at about the same time, perhaps as an early '03. The drop-top will be assembled alongside hatchbacks at VW's Puebla, Mexico plant, but with special body engineering by Karmann of Germany, which built the original Beetle convertibles of old. Unlike the Golf/Jetta-based Cabrio, the new sunshine Bug should do without an ungainly over-the-cockpit hoop. Engine choices will likely be limited to the base 2.0-liter and 150-hp turbo 1.8T.

Further ahead, sources are unsure whether there will be a "New New Beetle." There's certainly less need for one than there was four years ago, as the rest of the lineup is selling well and will soon expand with VW's first SUV and a New Microbus, both of which look like major showroom draws. For now it seems today's New Beetle will likely carry on pretty much as is through model-year 2005, perhaps '06, by which point the rumor mill should have a line on what VW intends.

Acceleration

GL, man. GL, auto. GLS TDI, man. GLS Turbo w/Sport Lux. Pkg., auto. Class Average
5 4 3 6 5.7

Depends on powertrain. The 2.0 is peppy enough with manual transmission but sluggish with automatic. TDI copes well with traffic but lacks passing muscle. The gas turbo engines are strong, but produce little power below 3000 rpm and suffer turbo lag (a delay in power delivery). The 150-hp turbo is noticeably quicker than the 2.0: 0-60 mph in 8.2 sec vs. about 10.2, according to VW. The new Turbo S is faster still--7.4 sec 0-60 in our test--but it further exaggerates the turbo-lag problem.
Fuel Economy

GL, man. GL, auto. GLS TDI, man. GLS Turbo w/Sport Lux. Pkg., auto. Class Average
7 5 9 7 6.1

Test 2.0-liter New Beetles averaged 26.4 mpg with manual transmission, 21.1 with automatic. A manual-shift TDI averaged an outstanding 42.1 mpg. Test 150-hp gas turbo models averaged 22.7 mpg with automatic transmission, 23.5 with manual. Turbo S models averaged 19.8-24 mpg, depending on driving conditions. VW recommends premium fuel for the gas turbo engines.
Ride Quality

GL, man. GL, auto. GLS TDI, man. GLS Turbo w/Sport Lux. Pkg., auto. Class Average
6 6 6 4 3.5

Suspension is firm, but comfortably soaks up most bumps, helped by 16-inch tires and tight, solid structure. Available 17-inch tires turn the ride jittery and harsh except on smooth roads. Turbo S suspension feels even stiffer.
Steering/Handling/Braking

GL, man. GL, auto. GLS TDI, man. GLS Turbo w/Sport Lux. Pkg., auto. Class Average
6 6 6 7 7.4

Not quite as agile as Acura RSX or Toyota Celica, though Turbo S closes the gap. Bug body shape susceptible to stiff crosswinds, but pleasantly quick and predictable in changes of direction. Handling sharper still with 17-inch tires. Braking always strong and sure.
Quietness

GL, man. GL, auto. GLS TDI, man. GLS Turbo w/Sport Lux. Pkg., auto. Class Average
5 6 4 6 3.2

Gas engines are civilized. Turbodiesel is gruff in full acceleration and noticed at idle, nonintrusive otherwise. Highway-speed wind noise enough to require raised voices, though automatic-transmission models are geared for lower engine rpm and are thus a tad quieter than manuals. Turbo S rear spoiler automatically extends and retracts depending on speed, but it clunks and thunks doing so.
Controls

GL, man. GL, auto. GLS TDI, man. GLS Turbo w/Sport Lux. Pkg., auto. Class Average
6 6 6 6 5.5

Turbo S has white-on-black instrument backlighting, other models get blue illumination; gauges easy to read except for tiny tachometer. Flat power window/lock switches on doors require awkward wrist motions. Cabin decor: high style and high quality throughout.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GL, man. GL, auto. GLS TDI, man. GLS Turbo w/Sport Lux. Pkg., auto. Class Average
7 7 7 7 4.5

Comfortable seats have simple height adjusters but tedious backrest recliners. Fine leg room, towering head room even for 6-footers. Tilt/telescope steering wheel is nice, but driver's shift hand can easily collide with lower dashboard. Door mirrors and thick front windshield posts impede vision to front corners, and minivan-long dashtop takes getting used to.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GL, man. GL, auto. GLS TDI, man. GLS Turbo w/Sport Lux. Pkg., auto. Class Average
3 3 3 3 1.5

Leg room tight with front seats more than halfway back. Head room nonexistent for those over 5-ft-6. Doors open wide and both front seats tip up and forward, but entry/exit still not that easy.
Cargo Room

GL, man. GL, auto. GLS TDI, man. GLS Turbo w/Sport Lux. Pkg., auto. Class Average
3 3 3 3 2.9

Bug shape's sharply sloped rear roof limits space under the hatch, but rear seats fold nearly flat to open up a good deal more. Cabin provides skimpy storage for small items.
Value within Class

GL, man. GL, auto. GLS TDI, man. GLS Turbo w/Sport Lux. Pkg., auto. Class Average
8 8 8 10 5.2

The retro styling has its drawbacks, but the entertaining and well-built New Beetle is quite practical for a sporty coupe. Nostalgic appeal aside, it's a good value in this class.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
