Acceleration overall is decent and transmission kicks down quickly for passing, but highway merging is not as strong as in most V6 minivans. Uneven correlation between accelerator-pedal travel and engine power at low speeds can make it difficult to drive smoothly in traffic.

Test MV averaged 18.5 mpg in a mix of city/highway driving. That's slightly better than most minivans, but premium fuel is required.

Small road imperfections are well absorbed, but even moderate bumps pound through. There's rapid wheel patter on scalloped freeways and languid pitching on even minor dips and humps.

Antiskid system helps maintain grip in fast cornering, but tight turns encourage much slowing, as tipsy-feeling body lean sets in early. EuroVan also gets blown off course in gusty crosswinds. Fast stops produce lots of nosedive, but the brakes feel strong and are easily modulated.

Noisy even in gentle cruising, with loud thumping and body drumming on rough roads, ample wind rush, and fair coarse-surface tire thrum.

Radio and climate controls are small and a long reach away. Other controls fine, gauges clear and nicely lit in violet. Low-mounted shift lever is awkward to use. Cabin decor is no-frills, but materials mostly impress.

Limited head and leg room for taller folks on rather flat seats with tedious backrest adjusters. Driver seat doesn't adjust for height, and steering wheel neither tilts nor telescopes, resulting in a buslike driving stance. Very narrow door sills and intrusive windshield posts demand contortions to avoid banged heads on entry. Large windows and thin roof pillars aid visibility, though multiple headrests hinder the view aft.

Terrific 2nd-row people space in GLS. MV's rear-facing 2nd-row buckets force occupants to sit bolt upright, and taller riders must intertwine legs with those in 3rd row. MV's pop-up table between the two rows can be handy, though. Enough width for three medium adults on the 3rd-row bench. Lack of left-side rear door and power-door operation are serious omissions.

Enormous in full-cargo mode, but you need a wrench to remove the GLS's 2nd- and 3rd-row seats. The 19 cu ft behind the 3rd seat can be split with a removable, hinged, horizontal shelf. No console box or glovebox, though there are locking map pockets and a couple of small bins. Two cupholders are inconveniently mounted on floor.

It's quirky, noisy, and lacks such basic features as a left-side sliding door. On the upside, the stubbornly unorthodox EuroVan is roomy and is reasonably priced considering its level of standard equipment.
