2002 Toyota Corolla Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2002 Toyota Corolla Review
With an all-new sedan due in February, Corolla is unchanged for 2002. Offered in base CE, sporty S, and top-line LE models, all share a 4-cyl engine with manual or automatic transmission. Front side airbags are optional, and ABS is available on S and LE. The S comes with standard fog lights, tachometer, and wider tires. Corolla lends its design and powertrains to the Chevrolet Prizm, which is built alongside it at a Toyota-General Motors plant in California. Prizm will be discontinued after the '02 model year.
Competition
A perennial favorite, the Honda Civic, is as good as ever. We love the wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. We also love almost everything about the Ford Focus, but were reluctant to rank it a Best Buy because it was new from the ground up. After a year of living with a ZTS model, we can say that the reliability is good. Focus ranks a notch below Civic in some areas but costs less.

Topping the crowded Recommended list are the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys. However, they are among the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the no-frills Toyota Echo, the sporty Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege.
News
Though still one of America's favorite subcompacts, Corolla slipped behind Honda Civic and Ford Focus in calendar-2000 sales, losing 7.6 percent to just over 230,000. Deliveries slipped further in 2001, but by less than 1 percent through the end of September, a very good showing in a newly troubled economy and uncertain national climate.

Earlier reports said Corolla would be dropped entirely after 2002, but what they really meant was that the current model would step aside for a redesigned replacement. Sure enough, it bows in February as an early 2003 debut on a fresh platform that also serves Toyota's new Matrix "sport wagon". From what we can discern, the '03 Corolla will follow Toyota's current design approach, as seen in the full-size Avalon and 2002 Camry, becoming slightly taller on a longer wheelbase for more interior room. Overall length and width should be little changed. So, too, the basic 1.8-liter 4-cyl engine, though horsepower should rise by 5 to 130. We'd also expect today's old-fashioned 3-speed automatic to be replaced by a 4-speed option to make Corolla more competitive with class rivals in this respect. We also think there's an outside chance of an optional continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT, similar to that in the hybrid-power Prius, though perhaps not before 2004 or '05.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

CE, man. LE, auto. Class Average
4 4 3.7

Corolla and Prizm are fairly frisky with the slick-shifting manual transmission, a bit sleepy with automatic, though automatic test Corolla ran 0-60 mph in a decent 9.7 sec. Either way, the air conditioning saps noticeable power, especially in midrange passing.
Fuel Economy

CE, man. LE, auto. Class Average
8 7 6.7

We averaged 26.5-29.3 mpg with automatic-transmission test models and close to 30 with manual--fine results for the class.
Ride Quality

CE, man. LE, auto. Class Average
4 4 4.1

Chassis tuning favors ride over handling, so Corolla and Prizm smother bumps quite well. Still, there's some small-car chop over patchy pavement and expansion joins.
Steering/Handling/Braking

CE, man. LE, auto. Class Average
4 5 4.9

Small tires and soft damping mean limited cornering grip and moderate body lean. Easy to park, though, and highway stability is better than average. Optional ABS makes for strong, quick stops, but brake-pedal action is mushy.
Quietness

CE, man. LE, auto. Class Average
4 4 3.6

Corolla seems better insulated than Prizm, but both have low wind and road noise for the class. Full-throttle engine thrash mostly goes away in moderate-speed cruising.
Controls

CE, man. LE, auto. Class Average
7 7 5.6

No design flair, but simple and convenient. Radio and climate controls require a slight stretch, though.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

CE, man. LE, auto. Class Average
4 4 4.4

Vintage-1993 body design provides only average room. Lowish dashboard and windowsills lend an airy feel and good all-round driver visibility. Seat comfort and entry/exit are just OK.
Room/Comfort (rear)

CE, man. LE, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.2

Very tight for adults, with notably little toe and leg room, but rear doors open wide enough at the base for acceptable entry/exit.
Cargo Room

CE, man. LE, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.3

Usefully sized trunk is spoiled by lid hinges that steal space. Base models don't offer the utility of a split-fold rear seatback.
Value within Class

CE, man. LE, auto. Class Average
5 5 4.7

These cars look and feel old against hip new designs like Ford Focus, but Corolla and Prizm are solid, reliable, no-risk small sedans. Prices aren't the lowest, though, and recent test cars had some unexpected quality goofs. Corolla far outsells Prizm and, being a Toyota, returns more at trade-in time.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

The Exhaust Emission Warranty covers corrosion-related parts for 2 years/24,000 miles, plus 8 years/80,000 miles on the catalytic converter and any on-board diagnostic device. The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.
