Vehicle Highlights
Toyota redesigns one of America's best-selling cars for 2002. Camry has new styling and a 2-inch longer wheelbase than its 1997-2001 predecessor. It's slightly taller and longer overall, too, but little heavier. Base LE, uplevel XLE, and sporty new SE models are offered. Standard is a new 2.4-liter 4-cyl engine with 21 hp more than the 2.2 it replaces. A V6 is available on all models. V6s and the 4-cyl XLE have standard automatic transmission and ABS; both are optional on other Camrys. New options include front torso side airbags and curtain side airbags; V6 models can combine these features with a newly available antiskid system. Also new is an optional navigation system with dashboard touch screen. The SE includes a firmer suspension, fog lights, rear spoiler, and special trim. Optional power-adjustable foot pedals were to be a midyear addition for automatic-transmission Camrys, but have been delayed to the 2003 model year. The ES 300 from Toyota's luxury Lexus division shares Camry's basic new design.
COMPETITION
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan forms, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.
Recommended models include the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, plain-Jane Ford Taurus, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. The restyled and larger Nissan Altima is new to the Recommended list this year. We are impressed with interior room and road manners, but disappointed by the budget-level interior materials and assembly.
