Vehicle Highlights
More power and revised equipment mark the 2002 version of Suzuki's midsize SUV. XL-7 is basically the compact Grand Vitara wagon with a 12.1-inch longer wheelbase and 19.1 inches of added length. It uses a larger version of Grand Vitara's V6, which gains 13 hp for '02. Manual and automatic transmission are available. XL-7 offers rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but has low-range gearing. Standard, Plus, Touring, and Limited models are offered. For '02, the Standard goes from 7- to 5-passenger status, losing the 3rd-row seat included on other models. XL-7s adopt the LATCH rear child-seat system with upper and lower attachment points. Also, the ABS standard on Touring and Limited models is now included on Standard and Plus 4WDs. All 4WD versions gain heated door mirrors, and Limiteds add a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, woodgrain plastic console trim, and optional heated front seats.
COMPETITION
This is by far the hottest market segment right now. Crowded with more than 20 vehicles, midsize SUVs vary in size and type but nearly all seat five adults and offer V6 or V8 engines. Our Best Buys are the Acura MDX and Toyota Highlander. Both offer competence, convenience, and attractive pricing and design. They lack serious off-road 4WD systems, however.
Our Recommended choices feature more-traditional SUVs: the Dodge Durango, which offers optional third-row seating; the top-selling Ford Explorer; the utilitarian Nissan Xterra; and the refined GMC Envoy. If you don't venture off-road too far take a look at the car-based Lexus RX 300 as well.
