2002 Saturn L-Series Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2002 Saturn L-Series Review
Curtain side airbags are among previously optional features made standard for 2002 on Saturn's midsize line. And added midyear was an optional rear-seat video entertainment system. The L-Series offers sedan and wagon body styles. Sedans come as L100, L200, and L300 models, the wagon as LW200 and LW300 models. All have Saturn's dent- and rust-resistant polymer panels for front fenders, doors, and bumper fascias; other body parts are steel. The 100 and 200 models have a 4-cyl engine with manual or automatic transmission, the 300s a V6 with automatic. In addition to curtain side airbags, standard features now include traction control, ABS, and, on all but the L100, 4-wheel disc brakes. Newly available on 300 models are optional 16-inch chromed alloy wheels vs. the standard 15s. Other new options include a 6-disc in-dash CD changer, and, at midyear, an automatic climate system. The entertainment system features DVD video, a fold-down ceiling-mounted 7-inch screen, and wireless headphones. A new grille and availability of GM's OnStar assistance system highlight changes to the slightly revised 2003 L-Series due in showrooms in mid-2002.
Competition
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan forms, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.

Recommended models include the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, plain-Jane Ford Taurus, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. The restyled and larger Nissan Altima is new to the Recommended list this year. We are impressed with interior room and road manners, but disappointed by the budget-level interior materials and assembly.
News
Launched in summer '99 for model-year 2000, Saturn's midsize line earned generally favorable early reviews, but was slow to catch on; even when it did, sales lagged way behind projections in the first 18 months. Lately, though, the L-Series has been holding its own despite a much more difficult market, year-to-year deliveries actually rising a bit in the first nine months of 2001.

Many critics say ho-hum styling has hampered the L-Series' appeal. General Motors seems to agree. Indeed, the 2002 L-Series may be a short-timer, as GM is reportedly rushing to get restyled '03 models into showrooms by spring 2002, some six months ahead of schedule. The basic underskin design won't change, but those who've seen the heavily facelifted L say it's much more visually interesting, even rather "European."

A fully redesigned L-Series is slated for model-year 2005 on GM's new Epsilon front-drive platform, thus becoming a not-too-distant relative of the next-generation Chevy Malibu and Pontiac Grand Am. That reflects a major change now going on at Saturn. Though conceived as an independent subsidiary mandated to create innovative vehicles standing apart from other GM models, Saturn is now being folded into the main GM organization as part of the company's global effort to cut costs, improve profitability and build market share. As a result, all future Saturns will have much more in common with other GM products, at least under the skin.

Acceleration

L200 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
4 4 5 5

Adequate, but not exciting. Saturn says 4-cyl/automatic-transmission models do 0-60 mph in 9.8 sec, while V6/automatic takes 8.2.
Fuel Economy

L200 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
7 7 5 5.3

Test 4-cyl/automatic wagon averaged 26.6 mpg, test V6/automatic sedan 19 mpg. Both engines use regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

L200 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
6 6 6 6.2

Firm ride is the trade-off for L's reasonably sporty handling. Wagons ride slightly stiffer than sedans; neither absorbs bumps as well as Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.
Steering/Handling/Braking

L200 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
6 6 6 5.8

Confident cornering, with linear and communicative steering; impressive braking power and pedal feel. Kudos for making ABS and traction control standard.
Quietness

L200 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
6 5 6 5.4

As quiet as most competitors, though not as isolating as Camry or Passat.
Controls

L200 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
5 5 5 6.3

Instruments are large and clear. Independent control of air conditioning is allowed in any vent mode, but the fan-speed switch is crude. Power-window switches are in center console. Gear-position readout for automatic transmission washes out in direct sunlight. Cowl is tall, vision directly aft in sedans pinched by high deck.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

L200 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
5 4 5 5.7

Adequate head and leg room, with comfortable seats. Available leather-upholstered buckets come with seat heaters, but cloth seats are more supportive.
Room/Comfort (rear)

L200 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
4 4 4 4.3

Head, leg room ample, but cushion is soft and too low to floor. Optional rear-seat video system is rare in this class.
Cargo Room

L200 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
6 8 6 4.6

Sedan's large, accessible trunk is a competitive advantage, as is availability of the wagon, a body style few rivals offer.
Value within Class

L200 sdn, man. LW200 wgn, auto. L300 sdn Class Average
4 5 4 6

Not a class-leader, but a decent midsize car offering good value. Base prices are well below comparable Accords and Camrys, but Saturn's full-sticker-price policy doesn't allow negotiating. However, L-Series has been a slow seller, so lease incentives and low financing rates should be available.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
