2002 Saab 9-3 Review
The 185-hp base-level models are gone from Saab's "junior" line for 2002. The 9-3 offers 2-dr and 4-dr hatchbacks and a 2-dr convertible, all with turbo 4-cyl engines. SE models come as the convertible and 4-dr hatchback and have 205 hp. The high-performance Viggen model is available in all three body styles and has 230 hp. SEs offer 5-speed manual transmission or optional automatic. Viggens come only with manual. The convertible has a power top with a heated glass window. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control, and front side airbags, are standard, as are front head restraints designed to minimize whiplash injury. General Motors owns this Swedish automaker, and GM's OnStar assistance system is standard. It includes voice-activated phone, e-mail, and Internet connection. Free scheduled maintenance (excluding wear items such as tires, brakes, and wiper blades) for 3 years/36,000 mi. is standard on all 9-3s except the SE hatchback, where it's part of the optional Premium Package.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has two clear benchmarks; the Acura TL and Lexus ES 300. Both succeed in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. ES 300 offers a little more luxury and TL, with it's Type-S, a bit more sport.

We Recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored BMW 3-Series as a rear-drive alternative. The "3" has enough bodystyles and engine choices to suit anyone. At the other end of the near-luxury spectrum is the posh and comfortable Buick Park Avenue--an old-school luxo-cruiser from Detroit.
News
The 9-3 lost more sales ground in 2001, just not as quickly--down 7.2 percent year-to-year through the third quarter after a 13.3-percent drop in calendar 2000. An elderly basic design (vintage 1994) has been an increasing handicap against newer class rivals, but that all changes with the redesigned 2003-model 9-3, which starts U.S. sale in summer 2002.

Though still Swedish-built and recognizeably Saab, the new 9-3 is heavily influenced by parent General Motors, introducing the new Epsilon front-drive platform that will also support the redesigned 2005 Chevy Malibu and Pontiac Grand Am. The 9-3 grows slightly longer and wider and looks like a scaled-down version of the bigger 9-5, judging by spy photos of late prototypes. Engines will be all-Saab, including, perhaps, a new turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cyl with Saab's own newly developed variable-compression system. This engine is reportedly good for at least 225 horsepower, high for the displacement, yet is said to be thriftier and cleaner-running than Saab's current turbo 2.0-liter.

Sources say body styles will expand to include a first-ever 9-3 wagon, which will also be offered with high-riding all-wheel drive and a more rugged look as Saab's answer to the Volvo V70 Cross Country and other car-based "crossovers." A convertible may or may not be added later, but high-performance models will continue, reportedly under the Aero name.

The Saab line may expand further with a rumored two-seat sports car that could be on sale as soon as late 2003. The recent 9X concept, a long-nose wagon-like 2-dr based on the new 9-3, is a possible template for styling and layout, though most sources expect a convertible, assuming GM gives the green light.

More definite is the midsize Saab crossover wagon now pencilled in for sometime in 2004. This would be either a retooled Buick Rendezvous/Pontiac Aztek or a cousin of Cadillac's forthcoming LAV "luxury activity vehicle". GM hasn't yet decided which platform to use, but standard features are almost sure to include all-wheel drive and a Saab-sourced turbocharged V6.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

SE 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
7 7 7 6

Strong, but marred by marked torque steer (pulling to one side) in rapid acceleration from low speed. Saab says 6.1 sec 0-60 mph for the Viggen, which is quick, and the SE isn't far behind. Automatic-transmission versions can be slow off the line, after which power builds suddenly. In addition to torque steer, all models exhibit turbo lag--a delay between throttle application and power delivery.
Fuel Economy

SE 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
5 5 5 5.1

A 5-speed SE convertible averaged 19.4 mpg in our tests, representative of the line. For maximum performance, Saab recommends premium fuel for both engines.
Ride Quality

SE 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
6 6 4 6.2

SE rides a bit better than Viggen, but both have stiff, high-performance tires that transmit lots of irritating thump and jiggle on small, sharp bumps.
Steering/Handling/Braking

SE 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
7 5 8 6.9

Sporty and predictable in all models, with good cornering grip and accurate steering. Brakes have good pedal feel and provide strong braking power.
Quietness

SE 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
5 4 5 5.7

Engines muted, wind noise somewhat disturbing for the class. Tire noise intrudes over coarse surfaces. Sedans properly rigid, but convertible flexes noticeably except on smooth roads, and last test example's top creaked.
Controls

SE 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
6 6 6 6.3

Generally good, but the automatic climate system that's optional on SE hatchback and standard elsewhere can lose its settings between startups. Floor-mount ignition switch is a Saab trademark. Detail finish good, materials classy.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

SE 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
7 6 7 6

Lots of head clearance and good leg room on firm, chairlike seats. Most drivers should feel at ease, though rear visibility not great in hatchbacks, awful in convertibles with top raised.
Room/Comfort (rear)

SE 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
6 3 4 3.8

Adequate room on comfortable seats in the hatchback's outboard positions, squeezed in the center. As is typical, entry/exit more difficult in 2-dr models. Convertibles have limited leg room, and seat only two in back because of a much narrower seat.
Cargo Room

SE 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
7 2 7 4.2

Hatchbacks have wagonlike room and versatility. Convertible has good-sized trunk for a ragtop. All get fold-down rear seatback.
Value within Class

SE 4-dr hatch, auto. SE conv, auto. Viggen 2-dr hatch, man. Class Average
4 2 2 4.3

Quirky describes the 9-3, and compromise is the byword for its turbo-engine performance. These cars have their charms, though they're obvious mostly to Saab loyalists. For near-luxury Swedish-style, more buyers turn to Volvo's newer S60 sedans and V70 wagons.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
