2002 Oldsmobile Alero: Overview

A new 4-cyl engine is the main 2002 change. Alero shares its design and powertrains with the Pontiac Grand Am, but has different styling. Coupes and sedans come in four trim levels. GX and GL1 models have a 140-hp 2.2-liter 4-cyl engine. It replaces a 150-hp 2.4, which had lower EPA fuel-economy ratings. GL2 and GLS models come with a V6 that's optional on GL1. Automatic transmission is standard, but manual is available on the 4-cyl GX and GL2. All Aleros come with antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control, air conditioning, power locks, CD player, and cruise control. GX is no longer available with power windows but gains a new Sport Package option that includes manual transmission, leather-wrapped steering wheel, spoiler, and alloy wheels. This package triggers a credit off the sticker price. Alero is slated to go out of production, though GM has not said when within the phaseout of Oldsmobile it will be terminated. GM confirms 2004 as the final model year for the brand.

COMPETITION

Not really a sport-utility or minivan, the PT Cruiser has been well received by our staff. It offers versatility and eye-catching styling not found among compact cars. Its only drawback is tepid acceleration. The loaded Volkswagen Passat also makes it to the Best Buy list this year, despite relatively high prices.

Recommended choices include the vanilla Mazda 626 and the all-wheel drive Subaru Outback/Legacy. Both offer roomy alternatives at fair prices.
