2002 Nissan Sentra Full Review
Date Published: 5/31/08
2002 Nissan Sentra Review
New sport models highlight 2002 changes to Nissan's smallest car. All Sentras are 4-dr sedans with a 4-cyl engine. Base XE and midline GXE models have 126 hp. (As does the CA model, sold only in California to meet strict emissions standards.) Gone is the 145-hp SE model, replaced at the top of the line by the SE-R and SE-R Spec V. These new models have a larger engine with 165 hp in the SE-R and 175 in the Spec V. The SE-R has unique interior trim, a sport suspension, and 16-inch wheels vs. other Sentras' 14s or 15s. The SE-R Spec V gets further suspension revisions, 17-inch wheels, distinct exterior styling touches, and its own interior decor, including sport front seats. Manual transmission is standard on all models--a 6-speed on the Spec V and a 5-speed on the others. All but the Spec V are available with automatic transmission. Side airbags and ABS are optional on all but the XE and CA. SE-R and Spec V have 4-wheel disc brakes.
Competition
A perennial favorite, the Honda Civic, is as good as ever. We love the wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. We also love almost everything about the Ford Focus, but were reluctant to rank it a Best Buy because it was new from the ground up. After a year of living with a ZTS model, we can say that the reliability is good. Focus ranks a notch below Civic in some areas but costs less.

Topping the crowded Recommended list are the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys. However, they are among the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the no-frills Toyota Echo, the sporty Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege.
News
Helped by early introduction of redesigned 2001 models, Sentra sales jumped 56.5 percent year-to-year in calendar 2000, then rose another 13.5 percent in the first nine months of 2001. Of course, people often turn to smaller, more affordable cars when economic life gets difficult, but Sentra's recent showing is commendable all the same.

The revived SE-R and new Spec V models put Nissan back in the "pocket rocket" game against Honda's latest Civic Si and Ford's newly heated SVT Focus, to name two. Sentra's next full redesign reportedly awaits the 2006 model year, with the current generation seeing no fundamental change in the meantime.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE-R Spec V Class Average
3 4 7 3.7

Test manual-transmission GXE did 0-60 mph in a lazy 9.9 sec; automatics need about 11 sec. SE-Rs among quickest subcompact cars: 7.8 sec 0-60 for SE-R, 7.0 sec for Spec V, Nissan says. Manual transmission in any Sentra suffers imprecise shift action.
Fuel Economy

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE-R Spec V Class Average
6 7 5 6.7

Test manual-transmission GXE averaged 24.9 mpg; expect slightly less with automatic. SE-R Spec V averaged 18.2 mpg. Nissan recommends premium fuel for the Spec V.
Ride Quality

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE-R Spec V Class Average
5 5 3 4.1

XE/GXE tend to bound over large moguls and jiggle on rippled freeways. SE-R has firmer, better-controlled ride, with Spec V reacting sharply to most any surface imperfection.
Steering/Handling/Braking

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE-R Spec V Class Average
5 5 7 4.9

XE/GXE have predictable front-drive handling with quick, responsive steering but modest cornering grip. SE-R versions stick to the road, stop, and change direction with impressive athleticism, but suffer some torque steer--unwanted pulling to the side--during quick acceleration. Brakes feel strong, but non-ABS test models tended toward sudden front-wheel locking in simulated panic stops.
Quietness

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE-R Spec V Class Average
3 3 3 3.6

Average in any model. Tire roar higher than the class norm--especially in Spec V--and full-throttle work makes the XE/GXE engine fairly loud and thrashy sounding.
Controls

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE-R Spec V Class Average
7 7 7 5.6

Neat, logical, unremarkable. Radio sits nice and high, but has small buttons. Interior materials solid and serviceable. SE-R versions dress up with metal-look finishes and leather trim.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE-R Spec V Class Average
4 4 5 4.4

Typical small-car space. Seats nicely padded and shaped; special Spec V buckets are very firm with prominent bolstering for great support in fast cornering. Drivers enjoy standard seat-height adjustment and tilt steering wheel, plus good visibility, but insufficient seat travel may cramp longer legs.
Room/Comfort (rear)

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE-R Spec V Class Average
3 3 3 3.2

OK head room for those 6-ft and under, but very little leg or foot room if front seats very far back. Entry/exit hampered by narrow door bottoms.
Cargo Room

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE-R Spec V Class Average
2 2 2 3.3

Subpar for class, with intrusive trunklid hinges and scant height beneath rear parcel shelf. Average-size trunk opening too. All but the Spec V have folding rear seatbacks, and Sentras have decent interior storage.
Value within Class

XE, auto. GXE, man. SE-R Spec V Class Average
7 7 6 4.7

No Sentra is as refined as a Honda Civic or Volkswagen Jetta, or as roomy as Ford's Focus. But these are solid enough small cars, and prices are competitive, even for the lively SE-R versions.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
