2002 Nissan Quest Full Review

2002 Nissan Quest Review
The current versions of Quest and Mercury's Villager vanish after the 2002-model-year run as Nissan and Ford end their minivan joint venture. Nissan says it will introduce a larger, redesigned Quest minivan for the 2004 model year. New wheel designs are Quest's only major change for 2002. GXE, SE, and top-line GLE models are offered. All are 7-seaters with a Nissan V6, automatic transmission, ABS, sliding-track 3rd-row bench seat, and dual sliding rear doors. Power side doors and side airbags are not available, though a rear-seat video-entertainment system is offered at no extra charge. Quest's performance and accommodations mirror those of comparably equipped Villagers.
Competition
Though the competition has heated up, we feel that the new Dodge Caravan is still one of the best minivans you can buy. It offers all of the creature comforts in a pleasing package at a fair price. Our other Best Buy is the Honda Odyssey. It's a little bit smaller than the Dodge, but more sporty to drive, and it has a super-convenient flip-and-fold-away rear seat.

Trailing at a close second are the Recommended Chevy Venture and Toyota Sienna. Though these vans are comparably priced and offer loads of neat features, we feel they can't match the road manners of our two Best Buys. Also garnering Recommended ratings are the Chrysler Town & Country and Chrysler Voyager. Though they are mechanically similar to the class-leading Caravan, they don't offer the breadth of model choices.
News
Quest and sister Mercury Villager became lame ducks with the announced early end of the Nissan/Ford minivan joint venture. However, after doing without minivan for about a year, Nissan will reportedly introduce a new Quest in late 2003 as a 2004 entry. It's apparently being designed on the new Altima car platform to deliver a sportier driving feel, but it's also likely to be larger than the outgoing Quest, which we and others often criticized as somewhat small for most minivan buyers. Previous Quest designs were based on the Maxima sedan, which will soon be a derivative of the new, larger 2002 Altima, but it remains to be seen whether Nissan can keep a car-like character in its new minivan. It's also unclear where the new Quest will be built, but there's a chance that Nissan can find room at its Smyrna, Tennessee complex alongside the Altima and related 2004 Maxima.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

SE GLE Class Average
2 2 3.8

Test GXE clocked 0-60 mph in a respectable 10.4 secs., though that was with just the driver aboard. Load up Quest and performance slows noticeably.
Fuel Economy

SE GLE Class Average
4 4 3.9

Our test GXE averaged a respectable 17 mph in hard city/freeway driving, though again with only minimal weight aboard.
Ride Quality

SE GLE Class Average
4 4 5.2

GXE/GLE are comfortably supple and absorbent, though wheel patter occurs on very rough surfaces. SE is little harsher despite firmer damping.
Steering/Handling/Braking

SE GLE Class Average
5 4 4.3

Predictable and quite carlike. Competent on twisty roads provided you don't push it too hard. Handy exterior size aids parking and close-quarters maneuvering.
Quietness

SE GLE Class Average
5 5 4.9

V6 betrays its truck origins in hard acceleration, but is otherwise acceptably smooth and quiet. Modest tire rumble and wind rush for a minivan, so highway cruising relaxed.
Controls

SE GLE Class Average
5 5 6

Mostly Nissan in design and so clear, convenient. Overdrive on/off button on shift lever is too touch-sensitive though, and foot-pedal parking brake is sometimes inconvenient.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

SE GLE Class Average
6 6 6

Comfortably spacious, but not unusually so. Seat and steering wheel adjust to suit most drivers. Great visibility save minor blockage by rear headrests.
Room/Comfort (rear)

SE GLE Class Average
6 6 6.7

On a par with short-body Dodge/Chrysler models. GXE has 2-person bench, other Quests twin buckets. Only preteens should attempt the tight 3rd-row seat.
Cargo Room

SE GLE Class Average
9 9 9.3

Also a match for short Dodge/Chrysler models. Middle buckets easily removed and replaced by sliding 3rd-row bench to open up extra cargo space in a flash.
Value within Class

SE GLE Class Average
3 3 5.5

Not the roomiest or most-refined minivan, but a pleasant, sensibly sized family vehicle offering good value and several unique features. Sluggish sales and announced end of production means discounts should be more generous than usual.

GXE 4-door van $22,739 $20,673 $540
SE 4-door van $24,499 $22,017 $540

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
