Vehicle Highlights
The more-expensive of Nissan's two SUVs drops last year's base model and adds features to the remaining Pathfinders for 2002. Gone is the XE model, leaving SE and LE versions. This truck-based 4-dr wagon shares its design and V6 engine with the QX4 from Nissan's upscale Infiniti division. The 4WD SE Pathfinder is available with manual transmission; the other models use automatic. All offer rear-wheel drive or 4WD. The SE's 4WD must be disengaged on dry pavement. The LE uses QX4's All-Mode 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement. Both systems include low-range gearing. ABS is standard. Front side airbags are included with optional leather-upholstery. Also optional are navigation system and rear-seat video-entertainment systems. New for '02 is a restyled grille, body-color bumpers and fender flares for the SE, and new wheels, including 17-inch alloys in place of 16s on the LE. Interior trim revisions include a new steering wheel with available audio controls.
COMPETITION
This is by far the hottest market segment right now. Crowded with more than 20 vehicles, midsize SUVs vary in size and type but nearly all seat five adults and offer V6 or V8 engines. Our Best Buys are the Acura MDX and Toyota Highlander. Both offer competence, convenience, and attractive pricing and design. They lack serious off-road 4WD systems, however.
Our Recommended choices feature more-traditional SUVs: the Dodge Durango, which offers optional third-row seating; the top-selling Ford Explorer; the utilitarian Nissan Xterra; and the refined GMC Envoy. If you don't venture off-road too far take a look at the car-based Lexus RX 300 as well.
