2002 Nissan Maxima Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2002 Nissan Maxima Review
A larger engine, new 6-speed manual transmission, and moderately revised styling mark Nissan's 2002 flagship sedans. Pushed upmarket by the redesigned '02 Altima with its available 240 hp, all Maximas get a 255-hp 3.5-liter V6 with 33 hp more than the 3.0 it replaces. Clear-lens taillamps and standard Xenon headlights mark the freshened styling. Base GXE, sporty SE, and luxury GLE models return. SE substitutes a standard 6-speed manual for last year's 5-speed. A 4-speed automatic is optional on SE and standard on GXE and GLE. GXE moves from standard 15-inch wheels to 16s; the other models go from 16s to 17s. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard and add full-power brake-assist for '02. Also new is revised interior trim, standard power driver seat, and trip computer with steering-wheel controls. A navigation system with dashboard screen is newly optional. Front side airbags are optional for SE and GLE.
Competition
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan forms, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.

Recommended models include the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, plain-Jane Ford Taurus, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. The restyled and larger Nissan Altima is new to the Recommended list this year. We are impressed with interior room and road manners, but disappointed by the budget-level interior materials and assembly.
News
Once Nissan's most popular car line, Maxima has lately run a bit behind sister Altima in sales. But though both are down in 2001, Maxima has been losing ground more than twice as fast--off 22.1 percent year-to-year through the third quarter vs. Altima's 10.8-percent decline. Maxima may face even tougher sledding now that Altima is slightly larger and offers almost as much available power for less money--not to mention a fresh new look.

But this situation is just temporary, as Maxima is being redesigned for model-year 2004 as essentially a larger, more luxurious Altima, with unique styling that should add length at each end, and perhaps a little extra width too. Nissan has already deemphasized lower-priced Maximas to put some marketing distance between the two lines, and the '04s will likely move a bit further upscale of Altima, though not so far as to interfere with sister Infiniti division's related I35. We'd expect two models: luxury and sporty. Introduction is reportedly set for the first quarter of 2003. Nissan will likely fire up the publicity machine by previewing the new Maxima as a thinly disguised "concept," perhaps as soon as this winter's auto shows.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

GXE SE, man. SE, auto. GLE w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 7 6 6 5

Muscular, with fine punch off the line and strong passing power. Expect 0-60 mph in about 7.4 sec with automatic transmission, 7.0 with manual, based on tests of slightly heavier Infiniti I35, which shares Maxima's design and engine. Preproduction 6-speed SEs we tested had notchy, noisy shift action, however.
Fuel Economy

GXE SE, man. SE, auto. GLE w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 5 5 5 5.3

No opportunity to measure the '02s. Last year's Maximas averaged 20-22.5 mpg in our tests, regardless of transmission. Nissan recommends premium fuel.
Ride Quality

GXE SE, man. SE, auto. GLE w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 6 6 7 6.2

Fine overall, but GXE and GLE tend to bound over dips that don't upset the SE. The SE, however, suffers some ride choppiness over bumps that the GXE and GLE comfortably absorb.
Steering/Handling/Braking

GXE SE, man. SE, auto. GLE w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 7 7 5.8

Standard 16-inch wheels and tires bring GXE abreast of GLE, with good steering response and grip in turns. Wider tires, tauter suspension make SE quite sporty. However, manual-transmission SEs tested suffered torque steer--pulling to the side in rapid acceleration. And, saddled with a beam rear axle, no Maxima feels as settled in fast, bumpy turns as do the best midsize sedans with rear independent suspension--the '02 Altima included.
Quietness

GXE SE, man. SE, auto. GLE w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 5 5 6 5.4

Mechanically refined. Low wind noise. Tire whine audible on most surfaces with SE's 17-inch tread; other models muffle road noise well.
Controls

GXE SE, man. SE, auto. GLE w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 8 8 5 6.3

Already-upscale interior subtly enhanced for '02. New titanium-color gated automatic-transmission shifter with matching door handles looks rich, and lever to preset sunroof opening is a convenience. Audio-volume and temperature knobs still look confusingly alike, and navigation system's many controls and busy "birdseye view" display can distract.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GXE SE, man. SE, auto. GLE w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 7 7 5.7

Adults get adequate head clearance even with available sunroof, plus more rearward seat travel than even lankiest should need. Seats nicely shaped and padded, and height-adjusting center armrest adds to comfort. Kudos for making 8-way power driver seat standard, though lack of telescoping steering wheel and curtain side airbags dates this design.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GXE SE, man. SE, auto. GLE w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6 6 4.3

Fine knee and foot space on a comfortably contoured seat. Too cozy for three adults, however.
Cargo Room

GXE SE, man. SE, auto. GLE w/nav. sys. Class Average
4 4 4 4 4.6

Standard 60/40 folding rear seatback augments decently roomy trunk, but trunk aperture won't swallow really bulky cargo, and lid hinges intrude.
Value within Class

GXE SE, man. SE, auto. GLE w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 6 6 5 6

Maxima won its following by blending near-luxury and sport-sedan attributes at popular prices. For '02, it's being refocused to compete more directly with such cars as the Toyota Avalon and Acura TL. While still quite good, Maxima will be challenged to demonstrate the sophistication required of its new role.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
