2002 Nissan Frontier Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2002 Nissan Frontier Review
Frontier drops its regular-cab body style for 2002, but becomes the first compact pickup with a crew cab long-bed model. Frontier comes as the 2-dr King Cab extended-cab, and as the longer Crew Cab with four conventional side doors. King Cabs use a 6.2-ft cargo bed. Crew Cabs have a 4.6-ft bed or, as the new Crew Cab Long Bed, the 6.2-ft box. The Crew Cab Long Bed rides a 15-inch-longer wheelbase than other Frontiers. All Frontiers are available with rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. The base engine is a 143-hp 4 cyl. A 170-hp V6 is standard in 4x4s, Desert Runner, and Crew Cabs. S/C versions have a 210-hp supercharged V6, 17-inch wheels, and stiffer suspension. Manual transmission is standard, automatic optional. V6 models have 4-wheel ABS. Also new for '02 is a redesigned instrument panel and an available high-watt Rockford Fosgate-brand audio system. A locking tailgate is standard.
Competition
Among compact pickups two vehicles really stand out: The Dodge Dakota and the Ford Ranger (and clone Mazda Truck). Dakota is the only one to offer a V8 engine, full-time 4WD, and near-full-size cargo and towing capacity. Ranger is the most refined and probably the best daily use vehicle.

This year we are limiting our Recommended choice to the Toyota Tacoma. It's every bit as good as the Ranger in daily use, just a tad more expensive.
News
After approaching archrival Toyota Tacoma in calendar-2000 sales, Frontier dropped 18.3 percent year-to-year in the first nine months of 2001 vs a small gain for Tacoma. That's telling, considering all the effort and money Nissan has put into Frontier updates over the last two model years.

But this basic design wasn't that great to begin with, and it's apparently still got a few more years to go. Sources say Nissan is giving priority to getting out a planned full-size American-built pickup, leaving Frontier to carry on as best it can through model-year 2004 at least.

The big rig, as yet unnamed, reportedly bows for 2004. It's said to be larger than Toyota's Tundra, aiming to be a more direct challenger to full-size domestic-brand pickups. In line with that, sources say only a V8 may be offered, either a 4.5-liter and/or a 5.2-liter based on Infiniti's division's Q45 flagship sedan engine. Styling will be brawny to match the size, though nothing as wierd as Nissan's recent Alpha-T concept truck. Further details aren't available, but the model menu should show 4x2s and 4x4s in 4-dr crew cab and perhaps 2-dr extended-cab styles, but maybe not a 2/3-seat regular. Not surprisingly, this truck will parent a new full-size Nissan SUV that's also due to be launched for 2004.

Frontiers are strongest with supercharging, but even then, aren't much quicker than most V6 rivals. Test 2WD S/C Crew Cab Long Bed did 0-60 mph in 9.3 sec with automatic transmission; a 2WD V6 King Cab needed 11.2 with manual. Base 4-cyl models are impractically sluggish for most users.

Test 2WD S/C Long Bed Crew Cabs averaged 15.1 mpg with manual transmission, 13.5 with automatic; Nissan recommends premium fuel for supercharged V6. Nonsupercharged models use regular; test manual V6 4x4 King Cab returned 14 mpg.

Among the better small pickups, with little impact harshness on sharp bumps but, as with any truck, ride motions are choppy on rough or broken surfaces. Crew Cab Long Bed's 131-inch wheelbase matches Dodge Dakota's as longest among compact pickups; it smooths ride motions some.

Cornering lean is always evident in any model, and as with any pickup, the rear end hops when the cargo bed is empty. Steering annoyingly light and numb. S/C model's stiffer suspension doesn't help handling much.

Supercharger hushes the V6 some, but all Frontier engines are noisy and gruff. Wind and tire ruckus also higher than the class norm.

Revamped dashboard mirrors "industrial-look" exterior styling with, unfortunately, too much hard plastic. Simple control layout works well enough, but main gauges reside in deep, dark coves and are difficult to read unless illuminated by turning headlamps on.

Generous space for 6-footers even in regular cabs, but seats are too low for some. Good entry/exit even on 4x4s, thanks to a lower step-in than some rivals.

Crew Cabs have better entry/exit than other brands' extended-cabs with rear-hinged doors, but it's still tight getting in and out and not very roomy. Rear-seat leg space adequate for adults only with front seats well forward. King Cab's two fold-down rear jump seats are small, tough to get to.

Frontier remains a run-of-the-mill small pickup, feeling quite dated despite its new SUV-style skin and flashy supercharged V6. Crew Cabs account for 45 percent of sales, with the new Long Bed expected to take 70 percent of those. Rivals have nothing like the S/C Crew Cabs, but there are better alternatives to any Frontier.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
