2002 Nissan Altima Review
A 2002 redesign swells Altima to midsize dimensions, and it's now slightly larger than Nissan's flagship Maxima. Altima gains 7 inches in wheelbase and 5.7 inches overall compared to its compact-class predecessor. It also offers its first V6 engine, a new 240-hp 3.5 liter exclusive to the top-line 3.5 SE. Base, 2.5 S, and 2.5 SL models use a 2.5-liter 4 cyl with 175 hp, 20 more than the previous Altima's 4 cyl. All team with manual or automatic transmission; automatic 3.5 SEs qualify for optional traction control. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard. All but the base model are eligible for optional ABS, which Nissan bundles with front torso side airbags and curtain side airbags. The 3.5 SE uses 17-inch wheels, the others 16s. Leather upholstery is standard on the 2.5 SL and optional on the 3.5 SE; all have a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. Xenon headlights are a 3.5 SE option.
Competition
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan forms, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced. However, Camry is new this year so don't expect any discounts.

Recommended models include the import-flavored Chevy Malibu and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. Both come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. We've also added the Ford Taurus and the restyled and larger Nissan Altima to the recommended list. The Taurus because of the wide selection of engines and bodystyles, and the Altima because we have been soundly impressed with its blending of performance and price.
News
Altima sales dropped 10.8 percent year-to-year in calendar 2000, but were down only 1.1 percent for the first nine months of 2001 despite an aging design and a slumping national economy. The redesigned 2002s, which got favorable early reviews, may reverse the slide, but we'll just have to wait and see.
