2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse Full Review
Date Published: 2/21/08
2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse Review
Eclipse offers hatchback coupe and Spyder convertible models. RS and GS versions have a 4-cyl engine, GTs a V6. Manual transmission is standard. Automatic is optional and includes a manual shift gate on GS and GT. Spyders have a power top with heated-glass window. Alloy wheels, air conditioning, CD stereo, and power windows/locks are standard. Front side airbags and ABS are available only on GT models. They're in the optional Premium Package that also includes traction control for automatic-transmission versions. The only changes for 2002: two new exterior colors, a new Mitsubishi logo, and for GS and GT, glove-box and vanity-mirror lighting.
Competition
Our only Best Buy in this class, the Volkswagen New Beetle, offers interesting styling and a nice mix of comfort, performance, and economy. The New Beetle is the most practical and affordable in this class.

If raw performance is what you are after, we Recommend the fun-to-drive Acura RSX and Toyota Celica. These cars offer a lot of bang for your buck.
News
Mitsubishi's number-three seller (after the midsize Galant and Montero Sport SUV) eased 1.3 percent in calendar 2001 after posting a 15.2-percent sales gain in 2000. Spyder convertibles rose 22.6 percent for the period but still sold in much lower volume than Eclipse coupes, whose 7.2-percent decline produced the net loss.

Details are already out on the 2003 Eclipses, which arrive this fall with mildly freshened styling and revamped interiors featuring new-look gauges and door trim panels, plus steering-wheel audio controls as a first-time option. But the big news is a high-performance V6 model called GTS with 10 extra hp, plus upgraded equipment including a 210-watt sound system with 6-disc CD changer, foglamps, side airbags, and 17-inch wheels. Prices won't be announced until just before the on-sale date, but RS and GT models are expected to cost little more than in 2002 form.

A fully redesigned Eclipse is forecast for an early-2005 debut as an '06 model. Its basis will be a new, so-called "flexible" platform being developed by Mitsubishi and its Chrysler Group sibling under the eye of parent DaimlerChrysler, which wants to cut costs and put these subsidiaries back in the black by greater sharing of underskin structure and components among comparable models. Besides Eclipse, the new platform will serve the next-generation Mitsubishi Galant and Chrysler Sebring/Dodge Stratus midsize sedans, all of which are due to arrive for 2005 or '06. Industry gossips have little else to say now, as all these programs are still in their early phases.

Acceleration

RS, man. GT, man. GT, auto. GT Spyder, auto. Class Average
5 7 6 6 5.7

Eclipses have larger, torquier engines than any rival, a boon in stop-and-go driving. Takeoffs are sleepy in 4-cyl/automatic models, but test GS coupe with manual transmission did 0-60 mph in decent 9.2 sec. Test automatic GT coupe took 8.6 sec. Spyders weigh a bit more than coupes but are about as quick.
Fuel Economy

RS, man. GT, man. GT, auto. GT Spyder, auto. Class Average
7 6 6 6 6.1

Good, but nothing special. Extended-use test automatic GT coupe averaged 20.7 mpg over 9848 mi. Automatic GT Spyder averaged 20.6, manual GS coupe 23.3. V6 requires premium fuel.
Ride Quality

RS, man. GT, man. GT, auto. GT Spyder, auto. Class Average
4 3 3 3 3.5

More pliant and comfortable than most rivals. Still, rough roads can induce wheel patter in any Eclipse, and Spyders show some body shaking, though they're acceptably rigid.
Steering/Handling/Braking

RS, man. GT, man. GT, auto. GT Spyder, auto. Class Average
6 8 8 7 7.4

Alert and responsive, with little cornering lean, and grippy front-drive predictability. Large turning circle impedes maneuverability, though. Braking uniformly good, but ABS should be available on all models, not just GTs.
Quietness

RS, man. GT, man. GT, auto. GT Spyder, auto. Class Average
3 3 3 2 3.2

Full-throttle engine noise prominent, and V6 is hardly quieter than the 4 cyl. GT exhaust note artificial and tiresome. Tire noise intrudes on coarse surfaces, but wind rush is minimal.
Controls

RS, man. GT, man. GT, auto. GT Spyder, auto. Class Average
5 5 5 5 5.5

Mostly clear and handy, but clock and audio readouts in the central dashtop pod can be tough to see in daytime. Ditto air conditioning and recirculation indicator lights. Budget-grade plastic dominates cabin.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

RS, man. GT, man. GT, auto. GT Spyder, auto. Class Average
4 4 4 4 4.5

Low-slung and cozy but not cramped. Huggy seats are comfortable. Visibility difficult aft--especially top-up in Spyders with their teensy back windows. Standard tilt steering wheel doesn't go high enough for tall drivers.
Room/Comfort (rear)

RS, man. GT, man. GT, auto. GT Spyder, auto. Class Average
1 1 1 1 1.5

Rear seat is a token gesture best left to children. As in most sporty 2-drs, entry/exit requires modern-dance moves.
Cargo Room

RS, man. GT, man. GT, auto. GT Spyder, auto. Class Average
5 5 5 1 2.9

Generous in coupes with the rear seat folded, limited in Spyders. Lofty liftover in both body styles, and the coupe hatch lid is heavy.
Value within Class

RS, man. GT, man. GT, auto. GT Spyder, auto. Class Average
4 5 4 4 5.2

V6 and relatively pliant suspension give Eclipse a more-conservative feel than Acura RSX and Toyota Celica, but both those rivals are newer, better-built, and more fun to drive.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
