Vehicle Highlights
ABS as a no-cost option heads a short list of changes for Mercury's 2002 midsize cars. Sable offers sedans and wagons in GS, new GS Plus, and LS Premium trim. All GS models use a 155-hp 3.0-liter V6, LS Premiums a 200-hp V6. Both team with 4-speed automatic transmission. ABS is now a no-charge option for all Sables; wagons include rear disc brakes instead of drums. An available Secure Group bundles traction control with front side airbags. Power-adjustable foot pedals are standard except on base GS models. Front bucket seats and floorshift console are included on LS Premiums and available for all GS models in place of a split front bench. The front bench is a no-charge LS option. Wagons come with a 2-passenger rear-facing 3rd-row seat. Sable shares its design with the Ford Taurus.
COMPETITION
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan forms, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced. However, Camry is new this year so don't expect any discounts.
Recommended models include the import-flavored Chevy Malibu and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. Both come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles. We've also added the Ford Taurus and the restyled and larger Nissan Altima to the recommended list. The Taurus because of the wide selection of engines and bodystyles, and the Altima because we have been soundly impressed with its blending of performance and price.
