Vehicle Highlights
These are Mercedes' biggest, costliest sedans and coupes. The sedans are the S430 and S500, named for their 4.3- and 5.0-liter V8 engines, respectively; the high-performance S55 AMG with its 5.4-liter V8; and the V12 S600. Coupes use corresponding engines and come as the CL500, CL55 AMG, and CL600. The V12 models' engine shuts down 6 cylinders to save fuel when full power isn't needed. AMG versions, tuned by Mercedes' high-performance AMG team, have 18-inch wheels and aero body addenda; a Sport Package option delivers their looks and upgraded tires to the other S and CL models. All have a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift gate, traction/antiskid control, ABS, front and rear torso side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Mercedes' Active Body Control, designed to minimize cornering lean, is optional for S430 and S500 and standard elsewhere. New for '02 is a more-powerful air conditioning maximum-cooling setting and a 3rd memory setting for seats and related controls. Standard is Mercedes' TeleAid assistance system and COMAND video control for audio, navigation, and phone. An Internet-based "InfoServices" feature displays user-selected data on the COMAND screen. Also available is radar cruise control designed to automatically maintain a set following distance from vehicles ahead.
COMPETITION
This diverse segment offers the widest price range and obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $44,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. The refined Lexus LS 430 can't be beat for comfort and features at just under $55,000. Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though a bit long in the tooth, also continues to impress with its impeccable road manners and luxurious comfort.
If you are looking for something a bit more sporting, we Recommend the BMW 5-Series. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the roomy Cadillac DeVille or Lexus GS 300.
